What We Are Looking For

The Academic Advisor position in The Honors Program contributes to the mission and strategic plan of the Honors College by advising students concerning their career and academic goals and academic requirements. He or she provides information and refers students to University resources that can assist them in meeting their needs or solving problems.

A Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant work experience is required. A Master's degree and four years of relevant work experience is preferred.

What You Will Do
  • Serve as advisor of record for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students by developing educational plans, selecting courses, evaluating academic progress, referring to university resources and reviewing options in all majors and minors across the university and study abroad.
  • Assist incoming students in learning about majors and programs in the College of Arts and Sciences during all orientation sessions. Visit with prospective students throughout the year. Serve on committees, provide evaluative information as requested, assist with all training workshops and other duties as assigned.
  • Leads Freshman Reading Project by choosing the common book to be read by all incoming honors students, training junior and senior student leaders, preparing writing prompts, collecting grades and attendance and coordinating opening honors assembly featuring speaker about the book.
  • Coordinate the Honors Book and Film Clubs whereby students may choose to earn additional honors credit. Train student leaders, reserve film club space and occasionally invite speakers to introduce films. Collect grades and attendance and monitor credit earned by both participants and leaders.
  • Assist the Senior Director, Director in handling special situations that include students, faculty, staff, Dean's office requests or Provost's office requests. Teach Honors Colloquium and other courses as needed.
  • Participate in special targeted projects and research with the direct purpose of positively affecting recruitment, retention, and graduation for the College of Arts & Sciences. This may include serving as advisor to the Honors Student Advisory Council (HSAC) and coordinating their meetings and events.

College Specific Responsibilities and Duties
  • Advise an assigned cohort of students during the fall, spring and summer (orientation)
  • Respond to the academic needs of all students in the Honors College.
  • Deploy strategies created by the Assistant Director for the direct advising of students in 90% of the College's degree programs each semester (18/20 departments)
  • Committee Assignments
  • Monitor and maintain assigned cohort advising records
  • Answer questions daily from students, parents, faculty, staff, other advisors and support staff
  • Answer questions daily from all advising campus partners as directed by the Senior Director, Director, Associate Director and Assistant Directors
  • Projects as assigned by Senior Director and Dean's office
  • Provide evaluative feedback when requested
  • Bi-annual meeting with Honors College faculty and Staff
  • Bi-Weekly meetings with Honors College staff

Other
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission
  • Ability to comply with university policies
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance
