Lab Specialist

Job Summary

The Osman lab seeks a Laboratory Specialist to conduct translational science protocols in the field of leukemia. This position will design, conduct, and analyze experiments on leukemia cell lines and patient samples. Much of this work is conducted with samples collected from patients with leukemia, and extreme attention to detail is required when working with these precious samples. We use innovative techniques to understand the intrinsic and extrinsic drivers of early leukemogenesis. The successful applicant will support the lab by conducting molecular biology, cell culture, and data analysis. Additional responsibilities may include ordering, preparing reagents and buffers, and managing day-to-day lab needs. We are looking for highly enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals with a strong work ethic who can interact well with others as part of a team. Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to be flexible in work practices are highly valued characteristics which interested candidates should possess. Current projects include flow cytometry, ELISA based assays, calcium release assays, DNA extraction and processing, RNA extraction and processing, qPCR among other wet lab techniques. The laboratory is in the Huntsman Cancer Institute Research North building at 2000 Circle of Hope. The position will be 100% on-site, with no remote work. Pay is at least $24.00/hour (~$50,000/year).

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Baccalaureate degree in biology or closely related field
  • Two years of full-time post-baccalaureate laboratory experience
  • Proven communication skills and attention to detail

Responsibilities
  • Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed.
  • Performs tests and procedures using laboratory equipment.
  • Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials.
  • Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research.
  • Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.
  • Train new lab personnel as needed

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); two years full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required.
