Position Summary:
The primary location of this position is on-site in Cullowhee, NC. This position is designated as being exempt from the State of North Carolina Human Resources Act (EHRA).

The assistant director will work closely with the WaLC director, associate director, and administrative support associate to support the mission and purpose of the WaLC and to develop and deliver common training and team-building opportunities for the WaLCs peer educators. This position will provide primary oversight for the WaLCs Supplemental Instruction (SI) and Academic Skills Consultant programs. SI coordination will require close collaboration with the director of the Mathematics Tutoring Center as well as department heads and faculty across disciplines.

Specific responsibilities of this role will include:
The assistant director will follow the SI model as established by the International Center for Supplemental Instruction (ICSI); collaborate with department heads and faculty across disciplines to identify historically difficult courses that could benefit from SI; ensure that additional course tutoring services are available to complement SI support; develop SI training and promotional materials; recruit, hire, train, observe, and supervise SI Leaders; reserve classroom spaces and maintain a master schedule of SI session times; manage the SI budget; and create and administer SI program assessments that include student, faculty, and SI Leader input.

Additionally, the assistant director will recruit, hire, train, and supervise academic skills consultants (ASC) who will serve as ambassadors for the WaLC and provide individual consultations and classroom workshops on topics such as time management, note-taking strategies, reading, and test-taking skills. The assistant director also manages the ASC workshop calendar and communicates with faculty, staff, and students about workshop requests.

The assistant director will teach peer educator training classes each semester and will collect, manage, organize, and report program assessment data to internal and external constituents, including the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), International Center for Supplemental Instruction (ICSI), and WCU faculty, staff, students, prospective students, and alumni.

Candidates should be able to work both independently and collaboratively and should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, teaching ability, organizational skills, and technological literacy.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for this position:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A masters degree in a relevant field or evidence of nearing completion of a masters degree (e.g., currently enrolled in a graduate program with an expected graduation date within the next year).
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States of America without the need for employer sponsorship or any other immigration-related assistance.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • College/University-level teaching or administrative experience; previous teaching experience at the secondary level; and/or experience working in a Supplemental Instruction or tutoring program.
