Job Summary:
We are currently seeking skilled and team-oriented applicants for the following position - Associate Vice President of Business & Auxiliary Services. The Associate Vice President (AVP) is a senior leader and manager reporting to the Vice President for Business & Strategy. The AVP is responsible for the strategic planning, operational oversight, and financial management of a diverse portfolio of auxiliary enterprises, procurement, and risk management functions. This position requires a high-level knowledge of business operations, the ability to prioritize a heavy workload, solid supervisory skills, and the ability to work collegially in a decentralized environment of shared governance.

The AVP leads most of the auxiliary enterprises for the university, including supervising the Director of Dining Services, Director of Eagle Services (parking, event planning, mail, and card management), Director of the Eagle Store, and the Director of Sports and Recreation. The AVP is responsible for financial oversight of annual operating budgets of approximately $16.5 million and must work on increasing the diversity of revenue-generating activities for the university.

In addition to oversight of auxiliary enterprises, the AVP supervises the Director of Procurement & Contracts and the Director of Risk Management. The AVP is responsible for the strategic leadership, oversight, and management of all contract-related activities at EWU. This includes the development, negotiation, review, and execution of a wide variety of contracts, including real estate and public works. The AVP also supervises the work of public records, records retention, risk management, and environmental health and safety.

The salary for this position is $152,320 (minimum) up to $158,524 (maximum) being offered. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience, and skills. Required Qualifications:
  • Education & Experience
    • A masters degree in business administration or closely related field; or a juris doctorate; and,
    • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in a complex business environment; and,
    • At least five (5) years of supervisory experience overseeing auxiliary services, procurement, and/or real estate, preferably within a higher education setting.
  • Skills
    • Significant experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating highly complex and high-value contracts.
    • Demonstrated expertise in budget development, fiscal management, financial analysis, and strategic business planning for revenue-generating operations.
    • Proven ability to lead and supervise a large, diverse staff, manage complex projects simultaneously, and make data-driven decisions.
    • Must have the ability to maintain professional and collaborative interactions with other staff and university constituents.
    • Demonstrated ability to apply a responsive and flexible approach that is supportive of the needs including universal access of our students, faculty, staff and the public.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working in auxiliaries or procurement at an institution of higher education
  • Previous experience with insurance and enterprise risk management

Auxiliaries
  • Provide strategic leadership to auxiliary enterprises. Develop and implement strategic plans, goals, and procedures for Dining Services, the Eagle Store, Eagle Services, and Sports and Recreation that align with the universitys mission, strategic plan, and financial objectives. Drive innovation, efficiency, and best practices across all managed units.
  • Oversee the daily operations and ensure the effective delivery of services for all units under the position.
  • In collaboration with the directors, manage the budgets for the auxiliary units, ensuring fiscal responsibility, strong internal controls, and the achievement of revenue targets. Develop complex financial models and pricing strategies, as well as looking for ways to increase the diversity of revenue-generating activities for the university.
  • Lead, mentor, and evaluate a diverse team of directors, fostering a culture of high performance, collaboration, and exceptional customer service.
  • Negotiate, manage, and monitor contracts with external vendors to ensure quality service and favorable financial terms.

Procurement & Contracts
  • Responsible for the strategic leadership, oversight, and management of all contract-related activities at EWU. This includes the development, negotiation, review, and execution of a wide variety of contracts, agreements, and memorandums of understanding. The position ensures contracts align with the universitys mission, policies, and legal requirements while mitigating risk and supporting institutional goals.
  • Requires a high level of expertise in contract law, negotiation and administration, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders. This requires a high-level knowledge of public works, information security, data privacy, insurance, and contractual requirements.
  • Supervises the Director of Procurement & Contracts. This department is responsible for handling all contracts for the purchase of goods and services, as well as public works. This unit also facilitates the purchasing process in Banner by creating vendors, encumbrances, requisitions, and purchase orders. It also administers and audits the use of purchasing cards, fuel cards, and corporate accounts with various vendors.

Risk Management
  • Directs and leads EWUs enterprise risk management strategies. This includes identifying, transferring, mitigating, and responding to risks. The unit is intended to provide support and guidance on a wide-variety of risks facing EWU.
  • Supervises the Director of Risk Management who is responsible for handling all insurance matters on behalf of EWU, including the procurement of insurance, insurance audits, and managing claims with EWUs insurers. This includes insurance such as property, cyber liability, international travel, student professional liability, summer camp, student athlete, drone, marine, and automobile insurance. The director is also responsible for conducting risk assessments for activities occurring on campus, administering EWUs youth protection program, and serving as the export control officer.
  • Supervision and oversight of Environmental Health & Safety. The office of Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for the universitys compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations relating to health, safety, and environmental protection. The unit is responsible for hazardous waste disposal, identifying and mitigating environmental risks, and responding to incidents. They also provide safety training for university employees.

Public Records, Subpoenas, Records Management
  • Responsible for oversight of the Public Records Manager. The Public Records Manager, in conjunction with risk management, is responsible for responding to all public records requests, subpoenas, search warrants, and FERPA requests on behalf of EWU.
  • This unit is also responsible for maintaining the records retention schedule, providing training to campus, and monitoring compliance with public records and records retention requirements.

Conditions of Employment:
This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.
