Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $90,400 to $93,564/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $65,700 to $115,100/year.

Work Location: Bio Sciences Annex 103 & 6759 Navigator Way

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under general supervision of the Associate Director of Custodial and Landscape Services, the Custodial Supervisor is part of the custodial supervisory team that is responsible for all aspects of the department's round-the-clock custodial services program involving 100+ custodial working staff. The Custodial Supervisor has full management responsibility for achievement of operational, personnel, and customer satisfaction objectives for all staff on their assigned shift.

Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma required or equivalent certification
  • 4-6 years Advanced knowledge in custodial and housekeeping services.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1-3 years Supervisor or Lead experience.
  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to learn new programs and hardware.


Special Conditions of Employment:
  • Hours and days may vary to meet the operations needs of the department. a) Visual acuity: Eyesight correction to 20-20. b) Depth perception: Average depth perception. c) Hearing: Ability to effectively hear and comprehend oral communication. d) Sense of smell: Ability to distinguish smells of various chemicals used in the cleaning process and to detect odors emanating from potentially hazardous conditions. e) Problem solving skills: Ability to understand and apply University and Department policies and procedures to specific situations. Ability to exercise sound judgment in solving problems. f) Working under pressure: Will assist emergency clean-up projects, maintain closet inventory of equipment and supplies, and maintain work assignment to department standards. Ability to accomplish work within deadlines; may handle more than one project at a time. g) Working with others: Needs to be able to work effectively in a team environment and needs to receive and follow instruction from supervisors. h) Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions in English. i) May be required to wear an UCSB-provided uniform.
  • Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
  • 55% Management & Leadership - Oversees the work of team leads and workers on assigned shifts. Communicates effectively to workers and team leads, addresses and resolves concerns promptly, and evaluates performance of team leads and workers in performance management process including written annual performance evaluations. Informally resolves personnel disputes and takes appropriate disciplinary actions when required. Maintains attendance records and assures staff attendance and productivity meets department requirements. Supports, coaches, and provides strategic service guidance to team leads in the accomplishment of department objectives of team performance, high worker morale, safety, productivity and quality of work. Ensures team leads develop and implement appropriate, regular inspections of all work performed in the unit.

  • 30% Customer Satisfaction - Meets and communicates regularly with internal and external customers to seek feedback regarding quality of service and work performed by teams. Develops and implements effective, measurable methods of obtaining regular, systematic customer feedback. Provides all customer feedback to the team lead promptly. Assists team leads in achieving customer needs.

  • 15% Supplies & Equipment - Maintains appropriate inventory, records, reports, and distribution plans for all supplies, materials and equipment used by each team. Assures team leads maintain appropriate levels of supplies. Tracks and reports regularly costs of supplies, materials and equipment utilized by teams. Assists team lead in security and distribution of all supplies, materials and equipment at team level. Meets with vendors and suppliers to assure best pricing and availability of required materials. Develops and implements a plan for repair of equipment as required.
