Position description
The Department of Film and Media Studies at UC Santa Barbara is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach two courses in the 2024-25 academic year, one in Fall and one in Spring quarter.
The course in Fall quarter is FAMST 192: Film and Media Theory. This is a 5-unit theory course that explores an area of film, television, or media theory in-depth depending on the instructor's expertise. Specific topics are open for discussion, earlier emphases have included classical, contemporary, and comparative theories of film and media. New iterations of this course can be developed according to instructor interest. This class includes 2 lectures per week of 2.5 hours (this time can include a screening), and discussion sections led by teaching assistants.
The course in Spring quarter is FAMST 46: Intro to Cinema. This is a 5-unit formal analysis course that teaches students about the fundamentals of cinematic language, form, style, and analysis, including narrative structure, sound, image, and theme. It is an introduction to the study of film as an aesthetic and social phenomenon, and to various methods of critical analysis. It includes 2 lectures per week of 2 hours each, 1 screening period of 3 hours maximum, and discussion sections led by teaching assistants.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
At the time of application, candidates must have completed all requirements for a PhD (or international equivalent) except the dissertation in Film and Media Studies or a related field and have one or more years teaching experience at university or college level.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
At the time of hire, a PhD in Film and Media Studies or a related field is required.
Preferred qualifications
Expertise in the critical study of film and/or media and experience teaching in at least one area of disciplinary focus.
