About the Library:

Located in the center of campus, the Pfau Library serves as one of the University's main focal point for student learning and academic life. The Pfau Library strives to support and enable learning, creativity, and scholarship by providing excellent library materials, services, and programs. With its highly capable librarians and staff, the Pfau Library has become a modern hybrid library that provides services and resources appropriate to the current technological environment both in person and via the Web.


Typical Activities
Reporting to Dean of the Pfau Library and Coordinator of Library Media Services, the Media Services Specialist will provide creative and technical training in multimedia equipment and production to students engaged in media projects for their coursework in both one-on-one and in group settings. Typical responsibilities include, but not limited to:
  • Incumbent will provide pre-production work with students, from helping them generate ideas to planning their production, to developing sets and shoots, with all types of media platforms.
  • Develop training program on various production mediums (i.e. Video, Photo, sound, etc.) that aim to enhance student media production skills.
  • Incumbent is required to stay up-to-date on media production industry trends and update trainings as needed.
  • Incumbent will provide annual multimedia production reports related to student usage, equipment replacement/update plan, and will develop other reports as requested.
  • Incumbent will organize, operate, troubleshoot, and recommend additions to multimedia equipment and software. This requires a working knowledge of production techniques and equipment as well as the ability to understand operating procedures in order to use and troubleshoot equipment and systems.
  • Incumbent will effectively track, maintain and inventory all multimedia production supplies that are used within the multimedia center.
  • Oversee and participate in daily operations of multimedia service desk, with strong organizational skills to schedule service desk calendar.
  • Incumbent is required to have working knowledge of safety requirements for properly managing multimedia equipment setup and tear down.
  • Incumbent will provided lead work direction/ training to student assistants and/or volunteers in basic production techniques such as multimedia editing, videography and recording productions so they may assist in a peer-to-peer environment, in person and through the production of video tutorials.
  • Media Production Specialist will lead and/or assist production of professional quality visuals for LMMC promotional purposes, using strong writing, communication, and photographic skills as directed.
  • Implement library policies and procedures related to the circulation of LMMC materials, equipment, and resources. Generate and maintain user statistics to facilitate assessment of the department and its services.
  • Incumbent will perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:

Equivalent to graduation from college or university with a Bachelor's degree in media studies, fine arts or related field or through technical experience and/or relevant coursework. Additional qualifying graphic design experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Incumbents must possess a minimum of 6 months related experience and a thorough knowledge of photographic and media production techniques.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of techniques, materials and equipment used in the production of instructional media and related communication assignments.
  • Working knowledge of full range of production techniques including sound recording, graphics,television, photography, video taping, lighting, editing methods and equipment.
  • Ability to set up and operate a wide variety of production equipment, including set-up for multi-camera video productions and distance learning classrooms.
  • Ability to learn techniques in the development of television, film, radio or multimedia productions.
  • Basic computer skills to operate digital and analog production-related editing and duplication equipment.
  • Basic photography skills such as film speed, light, and color requirements. Ability to perform photographic processing including an understanding of photographic chemicals and working knowledge of darkroom and development practices.
  • Ability to use and maintain studio, camera and related equipment.
  • Working knowledge of safety requirements including how to handle hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Solid writing and editing skills, including a strong foundation in English grammar.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain working relationships with staff and students.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, lower, push, and pull loads ranging in weight from 5-40 lbs.; must be able to carry loads ranging from 20-40 lbs. for distances up to 20 feet; must be capable of kneeling, reaching overhead, climbing stairs and ladders, walking, twisting, stooping, and bending; depending upon the project, employee may spend 25-40% of day sitting, 60-75% of day standing and/or walking.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in higher education is a plus.
