Job Summary:
The Center for Academic Advising & Retention and the Chicana/o/x Studies Program invites applications for the Retention Specialist/Advisor, for the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP).

The College Assistance Migrant Program is a federally funded program on a 5-year renewable grant with the goal of assisting migrant and seasonal farm worker students successfully navigate their first year at Eastern Washington University.

The Retention Specialist/Advisor for the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) grant is responsible for providing culturally relevant social and academic support services necessary to ensure the success and retention of students participating in the College Assistance Migrant Program. This position will assist students with developing academic plans that are consistent with their life, career, and educational goals. The Retention Specialist/Advisor will promote persistence, encourage resiliency, and provide the support CAMP students need to be successful in their first-year transition and beyond.

The Retention Specialist/Advisor has the primary responsibility to for managing the CAMP mentoring/tutoring services, including supervision of the student staff. Additionally, the Retention Specialist/Advisor, in collaboration with the Project Director, will coordinate CAMP orientation efforts, English proficiency and math assessments, communication with CAAR advisors and faculty about CAMP students' needs, identify and refer students to campus and community resources, and other related duties such as coordination, scheduling and monitoring program activities. This position will conduct group presentations/classes; meet regularly with CAMP program participants, and collaborate frequently with the CAMP students' assigned academic advisors to monitor academic progress.

Additionally, the Retention Specialist/Advisor will establish the CAMP Care Network in Navigate and will be responsible for managing the network and all early warning/progress report requirements.

Required Qualifications:
  1. Bachelors Degree in education or related field
  2. Professional experience with programs that provide services to students from underrepresented and/or first-generation, and/or migrant/seasonal farmworker student populations
  3. Demonstrated understanding of migrant/season farmworker student challenges and needs preventing them from success in higher education.
  4. One year of supervisory experience
  5. Experience in academic advising, counseling, social work or related work
  6. Experience in program planning and tutoring
  7. Demonstrated experience using computer technologies such as databases, internet, spreadsheets, tracking systems, and word processing
  8. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and time while under pressure to meet deadlines
  9. Demonstrated interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, or diversity


Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Masters degree in education or related field
  2. Two years of experience in educational or social services STEM grant programs.
  3. Spanish and English proficiency
  4. Experience working higher education

Responsibility / Duty:
Provide Culturally Relevant Retention Services
  • Under the direction of the Project Director, develop and offer grant required events
  • In collaboration with CAAR advisors, develop academic plans for each CAMP participant that are consistent with their life, career, and educational goals
  • Ensure each participants completion of English proficiency and math placement requirements
  • Monitor participants progress towards meeting the requirements of their academic plans
  • Identify academic, social and personal roadblocks to academic success, and refer students to the appropriate resources
  • Interpret university policies, procedures and requirements to students
  • Assess and maintain student records, reporting changes in program participation, participant persistence, and degree completion as requested by the Project Director
  • Build and sustain ongoing relationships with students that enhance the student/university connection.
  • Teach student success strategies through classes, seminars, and presentations

Manage Mentoring/Tutoring Services
  • In collaboration with the PLUS program, develop tutoring/mentoring services for the CAMP program
  • Hire, train, evaluate and supervise the student tutors and mentors for CAMP
  • Assess and report on the effectiveness of the CAMP tutoring/mentoring services as requested by the Project Director

Overall Program Support
  • Consult with faculty, staff and administration to maintain conversancy with and update knowledge of university programs, information and procedures.
  • Design and write informational materials for new students
  • Assist with annual CAMP Student Orientation
  • Attend Professional Development training which may include travel
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Project Director
  • Attend staff and informational meetings

Conditions of Employment:
This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

This position is covered by the Public School Employees Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Salary Information: $40,965 up to $46,000
(hiring salary is dependent on available budget, experience and qualifications)
