Position Description
Manages a unit within a department. Plans, organizes and develops goals and procedures for the unit. Represent the unit to administrators, outside agencies and others on relevant matters. Supervises subordinate staff.

Major/Essential Functions
The Facility Manager of the biosafety level two (BSL-2) and biosafety level three (BSL-3) laboratories in the Academic Sciences Building (ASB) is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facilities, including ensuring that laboratory personnel are following appropriate safety protocols. This position requires expertise in hazard identification, mitigation, risk assessment, and management. The manager serves as the primary point of contact for a Principal Investigator and provides material support information and instruction as necessary regarding access to and use of the equipment and other resources housed in the Facilities. Also serves as the biosafety officer for the facility. Other duties include:
  • Maintains laboratory facilities and equipment and ensures that they are maintained according to FSAP regulations and other guidelines.
  • Coordinates with the BSL-2/3 facility Director to ensure that all safety protocols are followed and that all personnel are trained and certified in the proper use of the laboratory equipment.
  • Ensures the facility is maintained in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
  • Addresses safety concerns and takes appropriate action when needed. Ensures that facilities comply with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Responds to emergencies both during working hours and after hours. Assists the BSL-2/3 Director with laboratory inspections.
  • Conducts laboratory safety training for BSL-2 and BSL-3 users and maintains appropriate training records.
  • Maintains adequate levels of PPE and laboratory consumables.
  • Coordinates researcher access to the BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs as directed by the BSL-2/3 facility Director and TTU Institutional Responsible Official.
  • Ensures day-to-day user cleaning and decontamination of work areas within the facilities and provides oversight of area decontamination of the facility when required.
  • Works with EH&S to manage biological and chemical waste.
  • Coordinates with EH&S the required autoclave testing. Maintains records pertaining to usage and testing results.
  • Works with EH&S to ensure that the proper biohazard signage is displayed throughout the labs. Conducts safety inspections and ensured that all safety equipment is in proper working order.
  • Coordinates the delivery of hazardous materials to the building to ensure that they are shipped and handled in full compliance with federal, state and local regulations.


Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree plus three years supervisory experience; OR a combination of education and/or supervisory experience to equal seven years.

Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. degree in molecular biology, microbiology, virology or a related discipline.
  • Two years experience working in a BSL-2/BSL-3 facility.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NIH, CDC and USDA biosafety, biosecurity and incidence response guidelines and regulations regarding BSL-2/BSL-3 laboratory practices, and familiarity with the Federal Select Agent Program.
