The Department of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in premodern South Asia. The position will run for one year beginning July 1, 2025 (start date is flexible up to Jan. 1, 2026). The successful candidate will have a central research focus on one or more regions of South Asia and will have completed a PhD in the humanities or social sciences between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2025 on a topic related to premodern South Asia. The candidate should have research (and ideally instructional) capability in one or more South Asian languages and should demonstrate exceptional academic promise. Disciplinary affiliation is open.
The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to teach up to one course per semester, share a research presentation, and actively engage with graduate students, faculty, and the life of the Department of South Asia Studies.
Applications should include a cover letter, CV, transcript (indicating completion of PhD after July 1, 2021), up to two writing samples that illustrate the scholar's commitment to the study of premodern South Asia, descriptions of two undergraduate courses the candidate would be interested in teaching (approx. 300 words each), and the names and contact information for three individuals who can provide letters of recommendation. If the candidate has not yet defended their dissertation, prior to the start date, they must provide a copy of the diploma or a statement from the registrar confirming that all the requirements for the degree have been met.
