Sr Accountant

Job Summary

As part of the finance team the Senior Accountant will be instrumental in maintaining, reconciling, analyzing, and budgeting at the Department of Public Safety in accordance to generally accepted accounting principles. The incumbent will serve as a liaison between the department divisions and university's financial services. They will also assist in other general business operations as assigned.  
Safety is a top priority for the University of Utah. The Chief Safety Officer (CSO) for the University is the Director of Public Safety and serves as chief of police services. The CSO is responsible for overseeing the University's Department of Public Safety, which includes the following operational divisions: University Police, Campus Security, Health Security, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications, and the central administrative Office of the CSO.

Responsibilities
1. Prepares and assess budget, revenue, expense, payroll and journal entries. Ensures completeness of financial documentation.
2. Analyzes and monitors budgets and expenditures for compliance with fiscal accountability and reporting requirements.
3. Develops and maintains reports for assigned area(s) and/or departmental projects and/or activities.
4. Monitor department's accounts receivable. Reports aging, trends, and outliers.
5. May supervise, train, and assist staff regarding university and departmental fiscal policies and/or procedures.
6. Reconciles balance sheets, cash, general ledger, payroll accounts, and journal entries.
7. Performs and/or monitors departmental financial transactions including: travel, purchasing cards, procurement, invoicing, and e-commerce.
8. Supports payroll functions.
9. Research, interpret, and/or report on financial policies and procedures or government updates.
10. Forecast current financial trends. Compiles data, produces reports, and makes recommendations to leadership.



Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus two years professional accounting experience. Also required are a thorough knowledge of established accounting principles and practices, knowledge of accounting software, advanced spreadsheet skills, the ability to write queries and macros and demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills.

Certifications as a Certified Public Accountant may be preferred for certain positions.
