Business Intelligence (BI) Architect and Data Scientist (Staff Associate)

Non-Unit Professional position, 37.5 hours/week

Campus Location: Danvers MA, Hybrid

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 4:00pm

SALARY: Anticipated salary range $95,000 - $110,000. Actual salary is commensurate with experience and education. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

As a member of the Office of Institutional Research, the Business Intelligence (BI) Architect and Data Scientist is responsible for developing, maintaining, and optimizing institutional reporting to support data-informed decision-making. The architect extracts, integrates, and analyzes data from multiple systems, including the student information systems, financial systems, and other enterprise platforms, to create comprehensive reports. Collaborating with departments such as Financial Aid, Enrollment Management, Finance, and Information Services, the architect assesses reporting needs, enhances data accessibility, and improves reporting processes. The architect also supports Institutional Research compliance reporting, ensuring the accuracy of data used for external reporting requirements. Additionally, the architect contributes to data governance initiatives, maintains thorough documentation of institutional reports, and supports reporting automation and process improvements. The architect leverages both existing reporting structures and evolving data environments, including data warehouses or data lakes, to provide meaningful insights that support institutional effectiveness, operational efficiency, and student success. Ideally, the BI Architect and Data Scientist will utilize statistical techniques and data mining to implement predictive modeling. They may also utilize AI in their efforts and where authorized by the College, for example, use AI natural language processing to analyze survey results for key themes and sentiments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Develop, manage, and optimize complex operational reports and ad hoc reporting solutions to support Financial Aid, Enrollment Management, Academics, Finance, and other institutional stakeholders.
  • Reverse engineer existing complex Cognos and Banner reports in preparation for moving to another reporting platform. Rewrite complex Cognos reports in another reporting platform such as Argos.
  • Design and implement data models and corresponding data joins, ETL processes, and data blending techniques to create unified reports from disparate sources.
  • Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and integrity in reporting processes while improving report automation and efficiency.
  • Work closely with Information Systems, Finance, Enrollment Management, and other teams to ensure effective reporting solutions that align with institutional goals.
  • Manage the back-end configuration of ZogoTech or similar reporting environments, including revising data models and approaches while integrating new data fields from disparate systems into the reporting structure.
  • Query and analyze data from ODS, data warehouses, or data lakes.
  • Support data governance initiatives, ensuring and developing standardization in data definitions, methodologies, and reporting accuracy.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of report definitions, business rules, data sources, and report usage.
  • Identify trends and key metrics to improve institutional effectiveness, resiliency and efficiency.
  • Work with college management and personnel on available systems and usage to progress our goal of data democratization
  • Recommend process improvements for reporting, data retrieval, and storage to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Provide backup support for dashboard data integration and maintenance.
  • Assist in the installation of data visualization and statistical analysis tools like Tableau, Python, and R.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in data science, business analytics, information systems, computer science, or a related field.
  • Five to seven years of experience in business intelligence, complex reporting, or institutional data analysis.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL, with the ability to extract, transform, and integrate data from various enterprise systems.
  • Experience working with a Student Information System.
  • Experience with enterprise reporting tools and the ability to adapt to new systems as needed.
  • Demonstrated experience in joining, integrating, and reconciling data from multiple systems to produce comprehensive reports.
  • Strong experience in developing complex operational reports, ad hoc reports, and compliance reporting.
  • Ability to document report structures, business rules, and data sources to ensure long-term reporting consistency.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with experience working directly with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Higher Education experience.
  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or National background check as a condition of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in data science, data analytics, business intelligence, computer science, or a related field.
  • Experience managing reporting system transitions, including implementation of new tools and migration of existing reports.
  • Experience configuring back-end reporting environments, including adding and mapping new data fields from disparate systems into a reporting platform.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau.
  • Experience with Ellucian Banner.
  • Experience using Python or R for data analysis, automation, or advanced reporting workflows.
  • Experience with predictive analytics or trend analysis in a higher education setting.
  • Experience as a report developer in Cognos and ZogoTech, including creating complex queries, data models, and automated reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with employees of varying technical skill levels, ensuring clear understanding and alignment on project goals
