A. POSITION PURPOSE

The Law Admissions Counselor is responsible for providing admissions and financial aid counseling to prospective, entering, and continuing students. This position will actively pursue opportunities to recruit students from diverse backgrounds for both the J.D. and LL.M. programs offered by the School of Law, and will serve as the primary contact for students interested in graduate legal programs. This position will represent the School of Law at recruiting events and will review applications for admission.

B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide admissions and financial aid counseling
  • Provides admissions counseling to prospective students and advises applicants, entering, and continuing students regarding available sources of financial aid and alternative financing. Counsels international students on potential sources of funding.
  • Conducts admissions and financial aid workshops.
  • Represents the School of Law at recruiting events.
  • Responds to admissions and financial aid inquiries and updates admissions and financial aid information on the website for the School of Law


1. Pursues opportunities to recruit students from diverse backgrounds for both the J.D. and LL.M. programs offered by the School of Law
  • Investigates opportunities and implements programs to increase awareness of the School of Law for students from underrepresented and diverse backgrounds.
  • Engages with legal and educational organizations dedicated to increasing the pipeline of high school and undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds.


2. Serves as primary contact for students interested in graduate legal programs
  • Acquires and maintains knowledge of applicable rules and regulations affecting international students interested in graduate legal programs.
  • Investigates opportunities to market programs to prospective students.
  • Represents the School of Law at events targeting students interested in graduate legal programs.


3. Reviews admissions and scholarship applications, and makes recommendations
  • Reviews applications for admission and makes recommendations on the admissibility of candidates.
  • Occasionally reviews scholarship applications and assists in the selection process for competitive and/or selective scholarships.


Other duties as assigned.

C. PROVIDES WORK DIRECTION

Occasionally supervises work of student assistants.

D. GENERAL GUIDELINES

  • Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services.
  • Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.
  • Maintains contact with customers and solicits feedback for improved services.
  • Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives.
  • Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow.
  • Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.
  • Prepares and submits reports as requested and required.
  • Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.


E. QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The items below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience required or preferred. This position requires the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.

  • Bachelor's required. J.D. desirable.
  • Minimum of 0-3 years of admissions and financial aid experience in a law school or graduate school environment desired. Experience working with international students highly desired.
  • Working knowledge of federal financial aid regulations and law school admissions practices and procedures. Familiarity with immigration regulations applicable to international students.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of products.
  • Ability to travel and work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Considerable time is spent at a desk using a computer terminal.
