Position Description

Seattle University has an exciting, dynamic opportunity for a Temporary Senior Tax Accountant to join our community.
Under the general direction of the Accounting Manager, this position is responsible for various tax and accounting functions within the Controller's Office

Essential Functions:

  • Primary responsibility for all aspects of accounting for tax filings, including:
  • Manage University tax risks and prepare tax filings.
  • Perform research and analysis on tax issues and develop tax related policies.
  • Act as primary liaison regarding IRS and tax authority inquiries.
  • Work with third party accounting firm regarding tax issues related to University Operations.
  • Primary responsibility for all aspects of accounting for split interest agreements (charitable gift annuities and trusts):
  • Work with University Advancement and the university's contracted administrator to establish new agreements and terminations of agreements, including preparing general ledger entries.
  • Prepare year-end entries for changes in asset valuations and FASB liabilities.
  • Prepare periodic compliance reports required by states of Washington and California for charitable gift annuities.
  • Assists Controller and Associate Controller to research and implement new accounting guidance and standards.
  • Properly documents accounting transactions, including preparing journal entries and appropriate supporting documentation that indicates where information was obtained and the appropriateness in accordance with GAAP.
  • Assists with the month-end and year-end closing process and financial reporting including account analysis and reconciliation, review of closing journal entries, and preparation of audit work papers.
  • Prepares internal and external reports such as questionnaires and census reports requested by auditors and or external agencies.
  • Demonstrate a continuous effort to improve and streamline current operations and work processes.
  • Provides back-up support to general accounting staff and other staff members in the Controller's office as needed.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting and a minimum of four or more years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated experience compiling financial statements and accounting for complex transactions. Excellent written and verbal communication and decision-making skills are required. Ability to work effectively in a collegial manner across all levels of the institution and the ability to maintain a professional problem solving demeanor.
  • Strong technical and computer skills required with highly developed attention to detail. Ability to effectively manage deadlines and multiple priorities. Demonstrated ability to use independent judgment and show initiative when resolving issues. Strong work ethic. Ability to handle stressful situations. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledge of computer operations, software, information storage and retrieval techniques and methods particularly as applied to accounting functions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • CPA or advanced degree.
  • Experience in higher education or other not-for-profit organizations that perform fund accounting.
  • Knowledge of tax compliance relevant to not-for-profit organizations.
  • Experience working with complex accounting systems

Compensation at a Glance

Salary Range: $48 - $50 per hour

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate's gender or any other protected status.

Your total compensation goes beyond the number on your paycheck. Seattle University provides generous leave, health plans, and retirement contributions that add to your total compensation package.

Hybrid Eligible

This position may be eligible for a hybrid schedule after successful completion of an introductory work period of 3-6 months. This may mean that a hybrid eligible role will begin on-campus initially and then will transition to hybrid format following onboarding and training. Flexible work plans are subject to periodic review and may be changed or terminated at any time for any reason at the university's discretion.
