Job Summary:

This position provides an opportunity to perform research with a specific focus on investigating the gut microbiome-joint axis in the context of Osteoarthritis, as well as microbiome impacts on the musculoskeletal system. The Zuscik Laboratory is a team of researchers with diverse research interests, located within the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado on the Anschutz Medical Campus. This position requires a highly motivated self-starter who is willing to learn and is able to work effectively independently and as a contributing team member. The ideal candidate will be experienced in osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal biology, and gut microbiome with a track record of publications supporting experience in these areas.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Analysis and dissemination of results related to ongoing and new projects within the group. More specifically:
    • Direct projects funded under an NIH grant aimed at elucidating the role of the gut microbiome in obesity-related acceleration of osteoarthritis
    • Contribute to ongoing projects in the lab, focused on 1) therapeutic potential of hydrolyzed hyaline cartilage oral supplements on osteoarthritis, 2) role of the B-cell in obesity associated osteoarthritis, and 3) study of the efficacy of abaloparatide and other parathyroid hormone receptor type 1 agonists as chondroregenerative interventions in osteoarthritis
    • In each of these contexts, scientific abstract presentation at national/international conferences and development manuscript for publication in the peer-reviewed literature.
    • Serve a lab managerial role, including coordination of finances and ordering, animal colony oversight, meeting planning, and writing activities both for ongoing projects and upcoming grant submissions.
    • This work will involve use of mouse, rat and rabbit models of disease, and work with human tissues and cells
  • Mentorship and professional development of younger lab members
  • Development of competitive applications for extramural grant funds
  • Serve a lab managerial role, including coordination of finances and ordering, animal colony oversight, meeting planning, and implementation of lab initiatives/new research directions in partnership with Dr. Zuscik

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule on campus and as needed for in-person meetings. Days per week in office TBD.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
  • PhD and/or MD degree
  • At least one year of postdoctoral research experience in one or more of the following areas: osteoarthritis; musculoskeletal biology; gut microbiome; computational biology, bioengineering, immology/inflammation

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience studying the gut microbiome
  • Experience working in preclinical animal models
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team to conduct clinically relevant research

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • Knowledge of basic musculoskeletal biology, microbiology and immunology
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$70,000 - $77,000

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
