Research Assistant/Analyst

Job Summary

Under minimal supervision, the candidate will perform varied support functions, including gathering and analyzing data through medical records review and related non-lab methods for use in studies publications and other research related uses. Contributes information or materials for research projects.
 
The Steele Center for Translational Medicine (SCTM) aims to identify therapeutic targets for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and its newest initiative, glaucoma, two leading causes of visual impairment worldwide. The SCTM is comprised of an interdisciplinary team of basic and applied researchers, clinicians, clinical staff, and national/international collaborators. Our scientific efforts center around unique resources, including a collection of over 8,000 pairs of donated human eyes - complete with full genetic profiles, images, and ophthalmic and medical histories - and a large study cohort of AMD and glaucoma patients. This research aims to help better understand genotype-directed disease mechanisms, identify causal pathways and targets, and develop novel therapies to halt blinding eye diseases.'

Responsibilities
Essential Functions: 1. Compiles data from medical, ocular, and other related sources. 2. Enters data into the FileMaker Pro program or other programs related to the research. 3. Maintains files and records of research data. 4. Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices, FDA, HIPAA, and IRB regulations while possessing an understanding of research procedures. Knowledge of data management and FileMaker Pro. 5. Strong computer skills: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Possible laboratory work in the future, if desired. 1. Knowledge of laboratory equipment usage and maintenance. 2. Bloodborne pathogen exposure prevention. 3. Knowledge of ocular structure and pathology, specifically as it relates to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma. 4. Availability to perform on-call functions as a backup only. These functions include: a. Maintains the physical environment of the lab. b. Collect human donor tissue specimens and process them according to research protocol. c. Back up on-call shifts only when staffing is lacking - not perform as the main function. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related scientific field, or equivalency, (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Demonstrates human relations and effective communication skills required. One year of experience in research and analytical techniques.
