Job Summary
The Rowley Lab (www.plateletlab.com) is seeking two highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Scientist to join their team within the platelet and thrombo-inflammation group at the University of Utah. The candidates will research how mitochondria, genetics and genomics influence platelet function, bleeding, and clot formation. One project will investigate the mechanisms regulating mitochondrial fission in megakaryocytes, and will use mouse models to determine how mitochondrial fission affects platelet production and function. The other project involves developing and implementing cutting-edge CRISPR/Cas9 approaches in primary human hematopoietic progenitors to evaluate gene functions and the effect of genetic variants in blood cells, including platelets and megakaryocytes. This will include designing and conducting high throughput functional assays and pooled library screens followed by validation of findings in cell culture and mouse models. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to prepare themselves for academic or industry success through presentations, publications, grant writing, and exposure to a diverse range of scientific techniques and collaboration opportunities.
Responsibilities
Investigate mitochondrial morphology and function in gene edited human and mouse megakaryocytes and platelets. Design and perform assays platelet function assays (flow cytometry, aggregation, in vivo clot models) Design and execute CRISPR/Cas9-based experiments in primary human blood cells to evaluate gene functions and genetic variants in blood cells Develop, optimize, and analyze high throughput functional assays and pooled library screens Help with the validation of candidate variants and genes in mouse models Analyze data using relevant software and present findings in internal and external meetings Contribute to scientific publications and grant proposals Collaborate with other members of the team and assist with training lab members Maintain detailed laboratory notebooks and ensure compliance with laboratory safety guidelines Present at relevant scientific conferences and meetings to stay current with the field.
