Full-Time Nursing Faculty

Pasadena City College is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Registered Nursing Instructor commencing with the 2025-2026 academic year. Nursing/faculty members in the Nursing program are directly responsible and accountable for ensuring the fulfillment of educational goals and objectives of the nursing program, and ensuring program compliance with the California Board of Registered Nursing. These responsibilities require leadership in both academic and clinical nursing, and include meeting student retention goals, participating in educational planning; evaluating student performance; motivating and advising students; and generating program reports as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE FULL-TIME FACULTY REGISTERED NURSING INSTRUCTOR:
- Creates lesson plans that align with and support the attainment of predefined student learning outcomes, i.e. learning activities and assignments for the classroom, laboratory and clinical learning, including supervision of students in clinical practice and debriefing conferences regarding patient care.
- Develops assessment tools that evaluate student learning, progress and performance that align with course and program learning outcomes.
- Coordinates and manages the successful implementation of assigned courses in consultation with members of the teaching team (class schedule, course syllabi, LMS, course assignments, exams, etc.)
- Prepares written evaluation materials (i.e. syllabi, tests, handouts, etc.) for submission and duplication in a timely manner
- Requests and submits complete descriptions of equipment and supplies needed for activities (clinical lab supplies, AV material, course budgets, etc.)
- Ensures regular and prompt attendance at all required course activities, committee and faculty meetings
- Plans and schedules teaching activities for theory and clinical/lab in alignment with curriculum and program learning outcomes.
- Prepares formal and informal reports as required for Systematic Program Evaluation, governing institution, and governmental and accrediting agencies (Records and maintains data for student records, grades, accreditation, and school studies (i.e. test item banks, course evaluation portfolio, annual course reports, etc.)
- Evaluates and monitors ongoing instructional activities and systems in order to maintain adherence of prescribed standards and student evaluation
- Holds students accountable for required competency in their performance, and assists students in remediation to acquire and maintain competence.
- Motivates students toward meeting course and program objectives through instructional and counseling activities including conferences with students concerning academic and clinical competence and progress.
- Participates in nursing scholarly activities related to position that support faculty development in teaching and learning for course and program improvement.
- Participates in recruitment and retention activities of the program including supporting scholarship activities of the college to support nursing students.
- Participates with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes. Uses the results to improve teaching and learning
- Participates in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities
- Perform divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties related to the ability to perform within the position.
- Be responsible, with other course instructors, for developing and maintaining curricula that appropriately reflect current knowledge in the discipline, including the impact of cultural diversity issues on course content and instructional practices.
- Teach courses per the class schedule and course syllabi.
- Select and supervise clinical experiences that provide learning opportunities correlated with the studied content.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with professional and healthcare agencies.
- Participate in Nursing Faculty meetings, including activities for Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accreditation and California Board of Registered Nursing approval.
- Ensure continued program quality and productivity through participation in faculty in-services and annual advisory committee meetings with clinical agency personnel.
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
- Must be familiar with word processing software and have an understanding of computer applications in an academic setting
- Knowledge of California nursing education regulations and accreditation standards for prelicensure nursing education (i.e., ACEN accreditation standards).
- Ability to motivate students to excel in theory and lab/clinical coursework.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent planning and organizational skills
- Ability to teach using a variety of methodologies and strategies to effectively instruct students
- Clinical experience in Medical/Surgical Nursing preferred (minimal of one year of clinical experience involving direct patient within the last 5 years)
- Ability to work in a multiethnic environment with students who have a variety of learning styles and abilities
- Willingness to work with and support basic skills students
- Willingness to make contract load by teaching in any of the programs within the nursing discipline (This includes LVN and CNA programs)
- Willing to remediate to another nursing specialty or content area based on the needs of the program
- Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of students with differing learning styles and abilities
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
- An interest and willingness to become involved in student clubs and activities
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree in Nursing
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing AND a Master's Degree in health education or health science
- Valid California Community College Instructor Credential
- The equivalent
(Note: A bachelor's in nutrition, dietetics, or dietetics and food administration, and certification as a registered dietitian, i.a. an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
Degree must be shown as conferred on transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. When equivalency is requested, the file will be reviewed by PCC's Equivalency Committee. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide ample documentation to support equivalent qualifications.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Additional nursing experience beyond what is required for the minimum qualifications
- Familiarity with clinical partners' hospitals
- Experience teaching nursing students at a community college or similar educational institution
Ten Months, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning fall 2025
Thirty-four (34) hours per week consisting of a combination of in-class teaching and preparation for teaching; five and one half (5.5) hours of additional time for student conferences; and five and one half (5.5) hours for professional growth and development, College governance and other professional responsibilities. The College has two 16-week semesters and offers a full range of courses. Faculty must be available and willing to teach in support of the scheduled course meeting times to meet program and student needs. Faculty may be offered the opportunity to teach classes during winter and summer intersessions.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Successful completion of livescan clearance and TB screening
- Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination
- Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109
- Meeting applicable eligibility requirements under CalPERS or CalSTRS if you are a current or former member
- Board of Trustees approval
