Postdoctoral Position

The Baslan Lab at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) is recruiting three (1 computational and 2 experimental) Postdoctoral researchers to join our multidisciplinary team of investigators. Our work focuses on studying cancer genomes, with a focus on the genetics and biology of cancer associated mutations termed Copy Number Alterations (CNAs). These somatic events change the number and composition of chromosomes in cancer cells to yield biology that is almost entirely unknown. To dissect these events, we employ a systems biology, top-down approach where advanced analytics of large datasets are coupled to focused perturbations (ex: shRNA, CRISPR, cDNA screens) in experimental model systems. More specifically, to test biological hypotheses, our group develops and applies:
  • advanced sequencing technologies, at single cell and bulk levels, to generate large multi-modal datasets.
  • novel algorithms and computational approaches, based on considerations of maths, statistics, and machine learning, to nominate novel cancer genes.
  • innovative, molecularly engineered model systems in in-vitro and in-vivo settings (e.g. mouse models)
  • highly parallel perturbation approaches.

    We aim to advance:
  • novel therapeutics; targeted as well as immunotherapies
  • early diagnostic as well as prognostic tools
  • novel technologies that can be leveraged to address outstanding biological questions

Disease areas of focus include, but are not limited to, acute leukemias, sarcomas, as well as breast and pancreatic cancers.

The three postdoctoral positions are distinct in focus and require different qualification as follows:

    Computational Postdoctoral Position 1:
Focus: Developing and applying novel computational models to nominate therapeutic targets in cancer.
    Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in maths, physics, or biomedical sciences and expertise in analyzing next generation sequencing data.
  • Required technical skills: statistics and machine learning (in broad sense)
  • Additional relevant skills (not required): survival analysis (e.g. Cox-regression) and computer vision

    Experimental Postdoctoral Position 1:
Focus: Studying cancer history using a combination of novel mouse models and sequencing technologies.
    Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in biomedical sciences with interest and expertise in mouse experimentation and microscopy.
  • Required technical skills: advanced working knowledge of mouse experimentation and microscopy.
  • Additional relevant skills (not required): computational analysis and genomics (e.g. DNA/RNA sequencing).

    Experimental Postdoctoral Position 2:
Focus: Dissecting protein translation dysregulation in cancer
    Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in biomedical sciences with interest and expertise in studying cancer pathology.
  • Required technical skills: advanced working knowledge of multimodal interrogation of clinical tissue (ex: histopathology and sequencing) and functional, perturbation-based biology (as well as a solid background in molecular biology).
  • Additional relevant skills (not required): fluorescence microscopy and computational analysis.

Interest applicants are requested to email the following material to Dr. Baslan at tbaslan@upenn.edu:
  • CV
  • Cover letter
  • a list of 3 referees
