Purpose
As a key part of the overall effort to enhance the resources, reputation, and relationships of Santa Clara University, the Senior Executive Director for Development has a leadership role in a high-performing frontline fundraising program. The University seeks to attract a talented and inspirational Development Leader.
The Senior Executive Director for Development is responsible for leading the strategic development and growth of a key portion of the frontline fundraising team in support of Santa Clara's schools, colleges, and centers of distinction. This position also plays a critical role in Santa Clara University's efforts to secure resources for its strategic funding priorities and deepen its relationships with alumni and donors.
As we look to future campaigns, the Senior Executive Director for Development designs and implements strategies for increased engagement with major-rated prospects.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Individual Giving, the Senior Executive Director for Development will lead and have direct management responsibility for a team of development officers charged with managing relationships and securing philanthropic support from donors capable of making gifts of $100,000 and $1,999,999. The Development team will build relationships and work closely with senior university administrators and with Schools & Centers on campus to develop meaningful, donor-centered development strategies.
The Senior Executive Director for Development will also be a key frontline fundraiser for the department, maintaining a portfolio of 100 major gift prospects. He or she will lead the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects targeted for gifts between $100,000 and $1,999,999.
This position is eligible for a flexible work schedule: hybrid - work from the office and
home.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Establish and oversee annual and long-term objectives for major gift prospects, executing on these plans to meet strategic goals and University priorities.
- Develop and coordinate major gift strategies to support Santa Clara's schools, colleges, centers of distinction, and the athletic department.
- Collaborate with other colleagues across the University's Community of Fundraisers to align major gift team goals with the overall goals of the university's development organization.
- Design and implement strategies for a comprehensive program for increased engagement and the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gifts to Santa Clara University.
- Provide leadership and direct management for a team of major gift officers, integrating their efforts across campus and directing their activities and strategies in support of the university's strategic priorities, charged with cultivating and managing relationships and securing philanthropic support from donors capable of making gifts of $100,000-$1,999,999.
- Establish performance metrics for Development Officers in concert with University Relations leadership and foster a culture of accountability. Ensures that active and effective strategies are in place for all assigned prospects, including timely and accurate use of the CLARA fundraising database.
- Plan and lead a comprehensive program for Development Officers for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of 100 high net worth prospects, ensuring that each receives regular and strategic contact, including face-to-face visits, phone, and email communication. Meet annual metrics set with the Assistant Vice President, Individual Giving.
- Partners with the AVP and Prospect Management and Analytics to identify and approve prospects for assignment, oversee the development and effectiveness of fundraisers' portfolios, and support campus-wide adherence to the Prospect Management process.
- Collaborate with academic leaders and other development officers to develop multi-interest proposals and promote organized and strategic outreach to our donors.
- Produce well-written, accurate, and timely follow-up and related correspondence such as comprehensive proposals, related budgets, contact reports, cover and thank you letters, e-mails, reports, and briefings supporting cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding assigned prospects.
- Track and record activities as they relate to assigned prospects using Blackbaud CRM constituent management software.
- Regularly reports to the Assistant Vice President, Individual Giving on gift activity, results, expectancies, and annual planning accuracy and strategic significance. Update on personal fundraising performance and that of the major gifts' officers, including future projections.
- Actively contribute to strategic planning, decision-making, and goal setting for the major gift officers to further University Relations strategic priorities.
- Meets regularly with major gift officers to review and oversee campaign-related fundraising performance and to oversee and advise on fundraising strategies.
- In conjunction with the AVP, prepare major gifts operating plan, goals, budget, and program direction,, consistently monitoring and reporting.
- Participate as an active member of the Office of Development, maintaining a healthy, fair and inclusive work environment by promoting diversity, exercising teamwork, and collaboration with working with diverse groups, donors, volunteer groups, and coworkers.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of Santa Clara University's mission.
Provides Work Direction
- Provide leadership, manage, and mentor major gift officers. Take responsibility for hiring, mentoring, annual performance review, and the handling of disciplinary issues.
- Inspire and motivate staff, meeting regularly to provide clear communication of objectives, goals and priorities, provide guidance and timely feedback; ensure direct reports have access to the appropriate training in order to perform their duties as assigned.
- Foster a collaborative working environment through appropriate training and personal example.

1. Knowledge
- Knowledge of higher education.
- Demonstrated understanding of major giving, annual giving, and planned giving programs, emphasizing personal solicitations.
- Knowledge of major gift fundraising principles and ability to participate in a complex development program, especially within an educational organization. Understanding of academic, scholarship and education functions and operating principles at the university level.
- Understanding of donor/client-driven customer service.
- Knowledge of scholarship and financial aid programs.
- Experience in budget development, implementation and tracking.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Understanding and appreciation of the mission of Santa Clara University and the vision and values of a Jesuit Catholic educational institution.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required
- Minimum 12+ years of related professional experience.
- 7+ years of direct major gift fundraising experience. Verifiable track record of raising $1,500,000 and above annually.
- 6+ years of direct supervision experience; track record of recruiting, hiring, training, and mentoring teams
- Valid driver's license.
Desired Qualifications
- Master's degree.
- Experienced in university fundraising with broad knowledge of the principles and practices of major gift fundraising, and a verifiable track record of having secured gifts of $100,000+.
- Experience in building fundraising teams and managing director-level fundraisers.
