About the Family Literacy Program

MSU Denver's Family Literacy Program consists of three programs: Adult Education, Parents as Teachers, and Early Family Literacy.

Position Summary

MSU Denver's Family Literacy Program (FLP) is looking for an ESL Coordinator to provide high quality English as a Second Language instruction and lead the ESL Preparation Team via program coordination. This is a full-time, administrative/teaching position that includes classroom instruction, planning time, and administrative duties. Among other duties, the position will provide direct classroom instruction using student-centered teaching methods and materials; lead intake/orientation & testing events; mentor the ESL Instructors and assist the Adult Education Program Manager with scheduling and coaching; assist the Adult Education Program Manager with AELA/AEFLA Grant reporting as it pertains to the ESL Program; and foster an encouraging and supportive learning environment for students by responding to instructional needs and by integrating pathways to career and higher education into instructional delivery and providing weekly feedback to students.

This position works in the Adult Education side of FLP which includes English as a Second Language, GED Preparation, and Family Literacy activities. The ESL program specifically is run with funding via the Adult Education and Literacy Act (AELA) and Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA) - program coordination includes adhering to AELA/AEFLA assurances and practices. This position reports to the Adult Education Program Manager.

Responsibilities
  • Direct classroom instruction that integrates career and post-secondary education pathways
  • Lead student orientation, digital literacy sessions, and support with standardized testing processes
  • Design and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) aligned with student goals and learning profiles. This includes assisting ESL Instructors with conducting student outreach
  • Maintain connections with partnering agencies, including for recruitment
  • Use industry standard software to track student progress, analyze student performance data, and adapt instruction accordingly
  • Develop curriculum for ESL Program
  • Collaborate with lead teaching staff regarding curriculum, syllabi, materials, testing and evaluation and assist with lesson planning and class preparation
  • Fulfill all testing, record keeping, and reporting responsibilities
  • Act as a secondary contact for Grants (AELA & AEFLA). This includes fulfilling all responsibilities related to assessment, progress tracking, accessible design, and compliance reporting
  • Manage Burlington English accounts and other LMS accounts as necessary
  • Participate in the hiring process of new staff and instructors
  • Participate in and contribute to staff professional development and training
  • Training and mentorship of ESL Instructors and department staff as needed. This includes assisting the Adult Education Program Manager with conducting observations
  • Assist leadership with special projects (spending, programming, expansion, etc.)
  • Coordinate with Family Literacy staff to support parent enrichment and intergenerational learning opportunities. This includes assisting the AELA Navigator with workshops and program development
  • Act as substitute for program (ESL, GED, and Workshops)
  • Other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications
  • B.A. in TESOL, TEFL, Education, or related fields
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience teaching adults in English as a Second Language; including preparatory digital learning management platforms and corresponding assessment tools
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, or advanced digital skills to quickly learn new learning management systems
  • Broad knowledge and skill with instructional techniques and strategies to think critically and proactively adapt instruction to meet student needs and challenges including students across Spanish, English, and English as a Second Language Speakers
  • 3 years of formal instructional experience in adult education
  • ABEA (Adult Basic Education Authorization) or willingness to obtain it within two years
  • Knowledge and practice of current ESL and adult education theory
  • Experience with standard educational assessment tools

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in TESOL, TEFL, adult education or related field
  • Understanding of College and Career Readiness Standards
  • Experience developing and/or delivering contextualized/student-centered instruction
  • Familiarity with the state approved NRS exams, their content, and/or databases
  • Familiarity with Learner management systems such as Burlington English, LACES, and/or GED Manager
  • Bilingual Spanish speaker

Schedule Information

  • Days of Week: Monday - Friday
  • Evenings and Weekend Work: Flexibility to work occasional evening hours as needed for student meetings, observations, recruitment, and marketing purposes. Very few select weekend days for beginning-of-year start-up and recruitment for back-to-school nights, etc.
  • Schedule: In person. Work will take place at educational centers partnering with MSU Denver Family Literacy including in Westminster and Commerce City. Program office is the Quigg Newton Community Center. The Family Literacy Program does not run programming during the month of July.
  • Travel: Rarely for professional development. Travel between sites in Westminster and Commerce City will occur a few times per week.


Salary for Announcement

Under Colorado law, MSU Denver is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The full salary range for this position is $49,900 - 74,900. The anticipated hiring range that the university reasonably expects to pay for this position is $55,000 - $63,000.

This position is paid monthly and is eligible for MSU Denver benefits.
