What We're Looking For
Baylor University's Controller's Office is seeking a Tax Compliance Manager to join the team. As the Tax Compliance Manager, you will serve as a key contact and program expert ensuring compliance with tax laws and optimizing tax strategies related to the University's various federal, state, and local tax compliance requirements.
A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, legal or a related field, five years of relevant experience, particularly in tax matters, and a CPA license or J.D. are required. A master's degree in taxation and eight years of relevant experience are preferred.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:
- Understanding of the needs of a diverse student population within a Christian higher education setting and an openness to cultural humility
- Strong interpersonal and written & oral communication skills and business acumen
- Ability to coordinate cross-functionally with multiple departments and levels internally as well as with external agencies and individuals
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in order to meet all deadlines (performance under pressure)
- A positive team player with ability to work independently under minimal supervision
- Proficient with online systems and specifically experience with CCH tax software
- Be available to work occasional after hours as needed to meet internal and external deadlines
- Be able to provide training to campus partners in areas of tax experience or expertise
- Be successful communicating and interacting with all campus populations including students, faculty, and staff
Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a Full-Time basis.
What You Will Do
- Serve as key contact and subject matter expert related to the University's various federal, state, and local tax compliance requirements
- Prepare tax returns applicable to the University, including Forms 990 and 990-T, state UBI returns, excise tax returns, sales tax, and other returns required by exempt organization law
- Coordinate gathering required information from multiple stakeholders across the University
- Ensure all filing and reporting deadlines are met and financial records are maintained in compliance with external regulations
- Maintain substantive tax knowledge for tax-exempt organizations, while utilizing research skills and translating tax knowledge and research into practical advice to stakeholders
- Respond to and timely resolve federal and state tax notices by coordinating with taxing authorities to ensure timely and accurate compliance
- Consult with University stakeholders to ensure that filing obligations are met across states where the University has activities and research activities in new locations that may create nexus
- Coordinate with University departments to accurately determine taxability of employee benefits in compliance with federal regulations
- Responsible for providing oversight and review of all state sales tax returns and ensuring timely and accurate filing
- Manage University unclaimed property filings and compliance, in all states where reporting is required
- Proactively provide tax-related guidance to campus partners to minimize risk for non-compliance
- Provide timely and helpful responses to inquiries from campus partners requesting guidance on various tax-related matters
- Keep up to date with changes in tax laws and advise management on potential impact
- Prepare training materials and documentation to keep stakeholders abreast of changes to key tax compliance requirements
- Maintain the University's tax manual which provides guidance to campus users on typical tax matters applicable to a research university
- Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission
