Mass Spectrometry Research Associate

Job Summary

Operate mass spectrometers and analyze samples, prepare samples (e.g. protein digests, reverse phase purification), consult with Lab Director and meet with users of the facility, prepare reports for analyzed samples. Consultation with users of the Facility regarding their samples and mass spectrometry projects will be important. Apply various sample preparation and MS strategies for analysis of proteins and other biomolecules based on current Facility protocols, experience, and information in the literature. While much of this knowledge is expected to be part of the job candidate's prior qualifications, the Lab Director will be available for consultation and instrument training.

Responsibilities
Operate mass spectrometers and analyze samples for intact mass analysis, native proteomics and LC-MS/MS mass spectrometry, prepare samples (e.g. protein digests, reverse phase purification), consult with Lab Director and meet with users of the facility,
prepare reports for analyzed samples. Consultation with users of the Facility regarding their samples and mass spectrometry projects will be important. Apply various sample preparation and MS strategies for analysis of proteins and other biomolecules based on current Facility protocols, experience, and information in the literature. While much of this knowledge is expected to be part of the job candidate's prior qualifications, the Lab Director will be available for consultation and instrument training.

MS or Ph.D. in biochemistry, chemistry, or related field, and a strong background in mass spectrometry is required. Minimum of 1 to 2 years' experience working in a MS lab is required, preferably with experience in proteomics and biochemistry. Strong computer skills and the ability to operate sophisticated instruments are required.

Minimum Qualifications


Preferences
Experience operating the following mass spectrometers is preferred, but not required to apply: Bruker Maxis-II ETD; Bruker timsTOF Pro2 with nanoElute2, ThermoFisher Scientific Exploris480 with UltiMate 3000 RSLCnano system, or other Orbitrap instrumentation. Experience with nano-HPLC is beneficial. Must be able to precisely and carefully follow the lab protocols and procedures for sample handling, reporting, and operating and maintaining mass spectrometers.
Experience in proteomics mass spectrometry, including in-gel protein digest, LC/MS/MS of protein digests, Proteome Discoverer, MaxQuant, Perseus, MSfragger, DIA-NN, or other similar software tools for identification and quantification is preferred. The candidate must have excellent English communication skills and demonstrate a professional work ethic with colleagues and users of the Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Core Facility.
