Position Summary
Assumes responsibility for supervising the computer-based classrooms, editing facilities and production equipment for the School of Communication in the College of Arts and Sciences. Provides support for technology needs for faculty and students in media, film and communication courses, ensuring that necessary supplies and equipment are purchased, maintained and stored. Performs all duties in full support of the University's mission, understanding that the positive and effective execution of these duties are instrumental to the education of the University's students.
Hiring Range
Budgeted hourly rate is $20.00 to a maximum of $22.70 per hour
Key Responsibilities
- Prepares and oversees computer-based classrooms and editing facilities for daily use by faculty, students, and instructors. Ensures classrooms and labs, as well as the technological components of coursework and student project work, are functional. Installs, upgrades, and maintains computer software. Maintains and sets up peripheral equipment in labs as needed for course instruction.
- Provides technical instruction and assistance to students checking out equipment. In collaboration with student workers, create and maintain supporting equipment checkout materials including videos and guides for instructing students in proper use of equipment.
- Makes recommendations for new equipment and software in consultation with faculty and administrators. Performs basic repairs and maintenance of production equipment and computers, and coordinates repairs with external vendors and/or internal business units including, but not limited to, ITS, MTS and Facilities.
- Designs and implements policies in consultation with the School of Communication Director, Cinema Program Director, and production faculty to manage the lending component of departmental production equipment to students, staff, and faculty including documentation and tracking of location and usage. Certifies equipment is in good working order when checked in and out, and documents instances of broken or malfunctioning equipment.
- Coordinates the hiring of student workers to work in the equipment room, serve as lab monitors in the computer labs, and complete other duties as needed. Oversees for paying student workers through work study program and departmental funds. Supervises student workers and approves time sheets. Recruits, trains and supervises student workers so that they understand and implement best practices for use and lending of equipment. Assigns student workers tasks to ensure that the equipment and computer labs remain in good working order and supervises the completion of these tasks.
- Works in consultation with faculty regarding the use of computers, software, and equipment in course content and assists in updates and development of new curriculum incorporating these components. Prepares and sets up equipment for classroom activities and departmental events, such as screenings of student work.
- Maintains accurate inventory of Cinema film library. Coordinates ordering of new films and ensures screening capabilities.
- Manage software access for students in DMJ and Cinema courses, adding and removing student account access to software as needed.
- Available to address urgent problems associated with production equipment, classroom computers and software, and resolve these issues in a timely manner.
- Establishes, cultivates, and maintains effective working relationship with TV Studio supervisor to incorporate all associated equipment in production courses. Assists with setting up TV studio equipment for courses as necessary and/or applicable.
