Representative Duties
BASIC FUNCTION
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Water Systems Treatment Operator performs technical and skilled duties to operate, maintain, diagnose, and repair the water systems, wastewater treatment plants, and swimming pool.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in this classification perform the full range of journey-level technical duties involved in the operation, maintenance, inspection, monitoring, and repair of water systems, wastewater treatments plants, swimming pools, and fountains. Incumbents monitor and ensure all Federal, State, County, and local requirements and standards are met and maintained.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties and responsibilities describe the general nature and level of work being performed. It is not intended to be restricted or construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of individuals so classified, and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee in this classification.
1. Operate, maintain, inspect, monitor, diagnose, repair, install, and replace water systems and wastewater treatment plant equipment and components including pumps, filters, valves, lines, switches, gauges, meters, reservoirs, storage tanks, electrical controls, blowers, lift stations, belts, and motors. Report and mitigate safety hazards.
2. Recommend water systems and wastewater treatment plant alterations or improvements, and design, construct, fabricate, install, and oversee work as assigned.
3. Develop, implement, and maintain a preventative maintenance schedule for all water systems, wastewater treatment, and swimming pool equipment and components.
4. Monitor, test, adjust, treat, and remediate water as necessary to ensure turbidity, pH balance, biochemical oxygen demand, residue, suspended solids, monitored metals, temperature, pressure, flow rate, taste, color, alkalinity, hardness, and other factors are within applicable limits or specifications.
5. Prepare, collect, maintain, report, file, submit, distribute, and keep records of samples, logs, reports, testing results, and data for water systems, wastewater treatment, and pool metrics.
6. Maintain, clean, monitor, test, adjust, and repair the swimming pool and fountain water, equipment, and components, ensuring efficient, clean, sanitary, and safe conditions.
7. Operate, maintain, and repair tools, equipment, and machinery used in water systems, wastewater treatment, and pool monitoring, operation, and maintenance.
8. Prepare estimates, order, and ensure adequate materials, supplies, and equipment are stocked.
9. Train and provide work direction to student employees and trainee staff as assigned.
10.Perform job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and college-level coursework in basic science, chemistry, or related discipline; and two (2) years of experience in water and wastewater treatment.
Certificates, Licenses, Special Requirements:
Certification by the State of California as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II, Distribution Operator II, and Water Treatment Operator II, or the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of employment as a trainee under a qualified employee or consultant. Certain assignments may require a valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the district's vehicle insurance program.
