Job Overview

Immigration Specialist (IS)/ Office of Global Services - Georgetown University. The Immigration Specialist (IS) advises incoming students on immigration matters, processes initial immigration documents and alumni immigration requests. OGS serves over 3,600 international students and scholars studying, researching, and teaching at Georgetown as well as those students who remain in the United States post-graduation to gain practical work experience.

The position has three major roles:
  • Incoming student document issuance
  • Incoming student immigration advising
  • Administrative immigration support for alumni


Work Interactions

The IS reports directly to the Associate Director for International Student Services on all student immigration issues. The IS works closely with the Assistant Director, International Student Services, who is responsible for managing the day-to-day and annual cycle of compliance functions and heading the issuance of Form I-20/DS-2019 documents for over 1,000 initial entry, change of level, and transfer students. The IS serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) serving F-1 students and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) serving J-1 students. The IS works closely with campus partners to facilitate the issuance of immigration documents and immigration check-in of low residency F-1 and J-1 students. The IS has primary responsibility for the new international email account and provides incoming student immigration advising.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 2-3 years of administrative experience in a high paced, professional environment
  • 1 to 2 years of working knowledge of F immigration regulations
  • Must have U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency to comply with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State requirements
  • Experience that demonstrates sensitivity to and acceptance of personal and cultural differences in people, and the ability to relate well to students from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds
  • Must have excellent computer skills
  • Possesses organizational skills to track and implement varied bodies of knowledge and functions and attention to detail
  • Ability to express him/herself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing


Preferred requirements
  • Current DSO or ARO designation is strongly preferred. Knowledge of J immigration regulations
  • Previous employment in an educational institution or an agency dealing with international educational exchange Knowledge of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), Student Information Systems (e.g. Ellucian Banner), and Immigration Management Software (e.g. Ellucian ISSM)

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$44,022.00 - $73,406.80

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
