Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will assist with the increasing number of writing assignments in the News Bureau, supporting the department's efforts to tell the College of DuPage story through content creation and leveraging social media. This position will conduct interviews and research, craft press releases, photo captions and feature articles for electronic and print media assets as well as the execution of the News Bureau's overall media outreach strategy.This individual will be efficient in writing for a host of various platforms to increase the College's visibility by crafting content regarding faculty, staff, students and community involvement/partnerships and utilizing the in-house camera and video camera.

  • Conduct research as well as write press releases and photo captions for media and the College's website.
  • Write feature articles for external publications, including the Community Report and bi-annual magazine.
  • Interview internal and external contacts for articles, including administrators, faculty and staff at the College as well as key community stakeholders. Must be efficient and utilize AP writing style.
  • Establish and work with contacts across campus to gain leads and develop story ideas. As directed, work in tandem with the social media specialist to leverage content.
  • Assist Media Outreach and Digital Content Specialist on large-scale media and story packages as needed.
  • Cover special events as needed.
  • Post articles and photos to College website.
  • Occasionally take photos with in-house camera.
  • Contribute to the development of PR and media outreach plans.
  • Assist Senior Writer in producing student, alumni and faculty success stories.
  • Support the Media Outreach and Digital Content Specialist in maintaining COD's virtual newsroom.
  • Utilize the in-house video camera to conduct interviews and create compelling content for various platforms.


  • Qualifications:

    • Education
      • Bachelor's degree or Associate degree and equivalent years of experience required.
    • Experience
      • Two to three years of experience in interviewing, writing and editing of news articles required.
      • Background in the field of communication required.
      • Demonstrated public relations, marketing or advertising writing experience required.
      • Knowledge of AP Style required.
      • Writing samples required.


    Working Conditions:

  • PC, copier, software packages (new hire will be trained on required department software).
  • General Office environment.
  • This position requires a background check and drug screen.

    Hiring Range:
    8 Salary/Starting salary beginning at $49,640, based on experience.

    Competitive starting pay is dependent on education and experience.
