Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $180,000 to $220,000/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $132,600 to $ 259,800/year.

Department Marketing Statement:
The UCSB Nanofabrication Facility within the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is a world class cleanroom consisting of class 100 and class 1000 cleanroom space. The 12000+ sq ft facility supports a wide spectrum of disciplines with optics, electronics, materials, MEMS, and physics making up the majority of the users. The 500+ user cleanroom serves UCSB faculty, grad students, and researchers as well as a vast number of external companies, universities, and government institutions across the nation. The NanoFab Facility is continually updating, installing and qualifying new fabrication tools & processes to stay at the cutting edge of wafer fabrication techniques.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:
Under general direction of the UCSB Nanofabrication Facility Technical/Operational director, the R&D manager is responsible for the technical and operational supervision and management of an advanced semiconductor prototyping facility which is expected to serve significant numbers of UCSB and external users during the year.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering related field or equivalent training and/or experience.
- 5 years of experience in Advanced Semiconductor Packaging field.
- 1-3 years of experience in Facility management.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Engineering related field.
- PhD in Engineering related field.
- 10+ years of experience in Advanced Semiconductor Packaging field.
- Broad knowledge of the Engineering function.
- Knowledge of organizational goals and objectives relating to subject area.
- Strong management skills associated with the planning, development, and construction of engineering research projects for unit.
- Strong skills and knowledge associated with managing research engineering projects of significance.
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with both external and internal contacts.
- Highly effective communication and presentation skills to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner to diverse groups.
- Demonstrated advanced interpersonal skills to effectively interact with senior management, peer level managers and outside contacts on matters of significance.
- Ability to prioritize and oversee research initiatives for unit in order to achieve goals and objectives.
- Ability to identify challenges and barriers and provide resolution.
- Strong planning and management skills to establish unit goals and objectives.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
- 30% Prototype Facility Management - Responsible for the technical and operational supervision and management of a research prototyping facility housing sophisticated photonic and electronic semiconductor packaging equipment serving a multitude of researchers each year. Serves as the managing technical and facility expert for these systems. This facility is used primarily by the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The facility will also utilized by researchers from industry on a recharge basis. Evaluates staffing needs within the Department, reallocating workload and duty assignments as necessary. Interfaces with Nanofabrication facility managers and engineers to provide seamless integration of semiconductor chip to package and prototyping for the facility users.
- 20% Supervision - Supervises a team of engineers and technicians defining job responsibilities for each. Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, assignment of job duties, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions within the guidelines and practices of University Personnel Policies, Fair Labor Standard Act, Collective Bargaining agreements, and other State & Federal Labor rules and regulations as appropriate. Responsible for training and orientation of new and continuing employees with respect to university policies and departmental procedures. Regularly reviews staff activities to ensure that staff objectives are met. Supervises the research activities of numerous research engineers, postdocs, visiting scholars and graduate students utilizing the facility. Supervises workforce training programs within the facility.
- 20% Lab Planning - Responsible for specifying laboratory renovations required for supporting advanced semiconductor prototyping equipment. Responsible for interfacing with facilities management and vendors as needed. Must anticipate and plan for the implementation of new or improved equipment. Determine system placement and space allocation for needed set of equipment to support advanced high frequency and photonic based prototype efforts. Collaborate with faculty, instrument suppliers, machine and electronic shops, and users needing advanced packaging systems to ensure that systems can meet the needs of the facility stakeholders.
- 15% Fiscal Management - Oversees major investments in semiconductor prototyping and test systems, fiscal management of the research facility, and negotiation and monitoring of contracted services. Establishes recharge rates and services to lead facility into a self-sustaining operational model.
- 15% Training and Safety - Responsible for the training of personnel on equipment which includes advanced photonic and electronic semiconductor packaging systems used for advanced multi-layer heterogeneous and hybrid integration projects. Ensures the proper and safe operation of the facility, equipment, and associated support systems. Supervises technical staff in the use and maintenance of all equipment in the facility. Ensures all health and safety requirements are addressed and followed by laboratory/faculty users. Serves as a local industrial and educational liaison for workforce development programs that will train people at all levels of semiconductor packaging and prototyping
