Position Announcement
Utah Valley University is seeking a dynamic Manager of Public Relations to help elevate the university's visibility and reputation through strategic storytelling and earned media. Working closely with the Senior Director of Public Relations, this role leads proactive media relations efforts, collaborating with faculty, staff, and campus partners to identify and share compelling stories that align with UVU's mission and priorities. Key responsibilities include writing and editing press materials, coordinating media outreach and events, and tracking and analyzing media coverage to measure impact.

Summary of Responsibilities
- The Manager of Public Relations works with the Sr Director of Public Relations to lead proactive media relations efforts to enhance the university's visibility through strategic storytelling and earned media. This role collaborates with faculty, staff, and campus partners to surface, shape, and share newsworthy content aligned with institutional priorities. Responsibilities include writing and editing press materials, coordinating media outreach and events, tracking coverage, and analyzing media impact. The position also supports crisis communications and contributes to reputation management and media strategy.
- Content Development: Writes and edits press releases, media advisories, talking points, feature stories, and other public-facing content. Partners with communications team members to ensure content is aligned with UVU's brand and key messages.
- Media Monitoring, Analytics, and Logistics: Tracks media coverage, evaluates sentiment, and prepares media impact reports. Uses analytics to inform future media strategies. Monitors issues and public perception of the university in key media channels. Supports media outreach and coordination for UVU events, press conferences, and announcements. Ensures accurate and timely communication with press contacts and internal stakeholders.
- Crisis Communication Support: Assists the Senior Director and AVP with developing responses and statements during high-profile or sensitive issues. Supports real-time communications and reputation protection during crises.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field, PLUS 2 years of experience in media relations, public relations, or journalism, OR any combination of education and experience totaling six years.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience using modern media tools and PR software (e.g., Muck Rack, Cision, Meltwater). Familiarity with the media landscape in Utah and the higher education sector. Excellent storytelling, writing, and editing skills with a portfolio of relevant work. Ability to work independently, manage multiple deadlines, and collaborate in a team environment. Understanding of digital media strategies, influencer outreach, and emerging communication trends.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge
- Strong understanding of media relations practices and journalistic standards.
- Knowledge of strategic communications, public relations, and reputation management.
- Familiarity with media monitoring and analytics tools (e.g., Meltwater, Muck Rack).
- Understanding of crisis communication principles and best practices.
- Awareness of higher education communications and public affairs environments.
- Strong knowledge of AP style and professional writing standards.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong attention to detail.
- Skilled in developing compelling, brand-aligned content across formats (e.g., press releases, talking points, feature stories).
- Strong media pitching and relationship-building skills.
- Proficient in using media monitoring and outreach platforms.
- Ability to interpret media analytics and translate insights into actionable strategies.
- Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
