Job Description
Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, Mechanical Trades or designee, the HVAC/R Mechanical Systems Technician is responsible for the safe maintenance, repair, and operation of the college's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This includes routine inspection, testing, adjustment, cleaning, and replacement of mechanical components such as fans, motors, pumps, compressors, and refrigeration equipment.
Schedule: Monday through Friday - 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the college's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Essential Functions:
- Perform routine maintenance and repair of high-pressure boilers (above 15 psi), high-pressure steam distribution system, HVAC/R equipment including, but not limited to chillers, pumps, compressors, motors, controls and gas turbine generator.
- Conduct routine and emergency inspections of high-pressure boilers, gas turbine generator and other energy systems.
- Inspect, test, clean, lubricate, rebuild, and replace components such as fan belts, bearings, filters, couplings, and other mechanical parts.
- Maintain all mechanical spaces and surrounding areas in a clean and safe condition; install and replace fan guards and other safety devices as needed.
- Perform basic welding, brazing, and machinist work in support of system maintenance.
- Read and record data from energy metering devices such as steam, condensate, electric, and gas meters.
- Undertake work assignments received in the form of oral or written (electronic) instruction, as well as sketches or blueprints.
- Work in support of other trades as needed.
- Responsible for maintenance and care of all related equipment.
- Drive college vehicles as assigned.
- Responsible for cleaning vehicles, inspecting for damage and performing visual check prior to using. Reporting any issues discovered to the supervisor immediately.
- Participate in required safety and technical training and apply learning to system improvements and maintenance best practices.
- Adhere to OSHA safety regulations, college safety policies, and all relevant environmental and safety standards at all times.
- Remove ice and snow and perform sanding as assigned.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
(education, experience, certifications, licenses, knowledge, skills)
- High school/vocational diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Minimum of five years' experience in the installation, maintenance, service and repair of mechanical equipment associated with high pressure boilers, pumps, steam systems and heating and ventilation systems, required.
- Must have a valid driver's license. Must complete and comply with all college driving credentialing requirements. Upon award of this position, a Division of Motor Vehicles background check will be completed.
- Must provide own transportation to carry out college work, which is reimbursable according to union contract agreement.
- Additional technical training in HVAC/R systems or related fields as well as additional technical experience in the maintenance of mechanical systems is required.
- Massachusetts 1st Class Fireman's License, required.
- Familiarity with ALC and Alerton DDC systems, desired.
- Operation and maintenance of centrifugal, screw, and absorption chillers, desired.
- Welding, brazing, or machinist experience, desired.
- Must be able to safely lift and carry up to fifty pounds regularly and ninety pounds occasionally.
- Must be able to bend, walk, stand, climb stairs and ladders and safely operate loaded hand trucks and dollies as well as work in very warm/cold, cramped and elevated spaces for extended periods of time.
- Must not be allergic to chemicals and/or materials used in the trade.
- Must be capable of wearing respiratory masks and other PPE as required for the job.
- Must be familiar with variable refrigerant flow HVAC technology.
- OSHA 10 or 30-hour certification may be required.
- A Massachusetts State Refrigeration Technicians license, desired.
- A Certified Pool Operators (CPO) license is required, or must obtain within 6 months of hire or transfer.
- An EPA 608, Universal Level Certification, required.
- Must demonstrate proficiency in accessing the internet, using the Smith College email, finance, payroll and calendar systems, trade related database systems as well as the work order system.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associates degree in engineering or related field, desired.
Skills
- Proficiency with HVAC/R tools, terms, schematic diagrams, and safety procedures.
- Must be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of all parts, terms, schematic drawings, tools and equipment, design, servicing, maintenance and operation of HVAC/R and DDC control systems.
- Must possess the ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and other specifications as well as plan work procedures.
- Must possess knowledge of all safety regulations applicable to work performed.
- Must have knowledge of OSHA regulations for the safety of the college employees, its users and property.
- Must demonstrate understanding of chemicals used, including but not limited to reading and understanding Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Must possess the ability to understand and execute written (electronic) and oral instructions.
- Must have excellent customer service skills and have noted ability to work well with staff, students and all members of the college community.
- Must have commitment to maintain high standards of maintenance.
- Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to analyze and improve system performance and suggest operational enhancements.
- Ability to use good judgment to take appropriate independent action to carry out the primary functions of the job.
- Must have a clear understanding of the union contract and all college policies.
