Job Overview

The Human Rights Institute ("HRI") is the focal point of human rights at Georgetown Law. The Institute aims to make Georgetown Law the premier training academy for the next generation of human rights advocates by providing them with the intellectual foundation, the real-world experience, and the practical skills necessary to be effective in today's challenging environment.

HRI seeks a Temporary Part-Time Research Assistant to support the Institute's ongoing projects with external partners. This position is envisioned for a recent Georgetown Law graduate, ideally someone who has participated in HRI's practicum course or otherwise engaged deeply with our work. While not limited to alumni, prior knowledge of HRI's projects and priorities is strongly preferred, as this role is designed to provide continuity, institutional memory, and targeted expertise for our small team. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct high-quality legal research in support of HRI projects.
  • Draft memoranda, briefs, or other reports for use by the Institute and external partners.
  • Support project management and coordination with partner organizations.
  • Assist with maintaining continuity on multi-year projects and initiatives.
  • Provide additional research and writing support to HRI faculty and staff as needed.

Work Interactions

The Research and Project Associate will work closely with members of the Human Rights Institute team, including our Executive Director and Deputy Director, staff, and fellows. The Associate will also engage with external partners and collaborators, representing HRI's work in a professional and collegial manner.

The Associate will contribute to research, drafting, and project coordination in support of HRI's ongoing initiatives. This role is part-time and flexible, with hours adjusted based on project needs.

    Requirements and Qualifications
    • J.D. or LL.M. (law degree) required.
    • Demonstrated background in human rights, international law, or related fields.
    • Excellent research, analytical, and legal writing skills.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small team.
    • Prior experience with HRI's practicum course, projects, or initiatives preferred.
