Job Overview

Under the supervision of Dr. Amrita K Cheema, the candidate will use advanced metabolomic tools for developing small molecule quantitation assays, preparation and analysis of biological samples for mass spectrometric analysis for supporting NIH funded project with a goal of developing MS based biomarker assays. He/she will receive work instructions to analyze data, design, and develop methodologies necessary for accurate knowledge discovery. He/she will participate on teleconferences to discuss experimental design with project collaborators for scientific coordination and data reporting on a periodic basis. The FTE hire will provide critical role and assist with successful completion of core projects, wherein the work includes optimization of MS sample preparation, developing small molecule quantitation assays, designing MRM assays in accordance with GLP (Good Laboratory practices). Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for determining assay precision and accuracy and generating raw data on LC/MS instruments, Pre and Post processing the data using algebraic and statistical calculations in Excel and R and various software's viz. XCMS, Metaboanalyst, and database searches of metabolomic biomarkers in METLIN, LIPIDMAPS, HMDB, MMCD, generations of technical reports. The other duties include but not limited to scheduling Mass spectrometry instrument operations and maintenance, data backup on a UIS drive, maintaining laboratory in compliance with safety procedures, general laboratory upkeep that includes autoclaving, scheduling waste disposal, update of chemical inventory. This position requires a unique skill set, dedicated work hours and high level of multitasking. As such, this cannot be distributed to existing positions.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Mass Spectrometry operations and maintenance
  • LC-MS samples preparation and processing
  • Data computation, analysis, consolidation and reporting
  • Interfacing with clients in a shared resource environment
  • Laboratory upkeep and compliance with EH&S regulations


Work Interactions

Under the supervision of Dr. Amrita K Cheema, the candidate will use advanced metabolomic tools for the preparation and analysis of metabolomics data. He/she will receive work instructions to analyze data, design, and develop methodologies necessary for accurate knowledge discovery. The candidate will also perform validation studies using molecular and cellular biology techniques. The candidate will process and integrate high dimensional data generated using multi-omics approaches. The candidate will work closely with the research associates in the laboratory and assist them with day-to-day service-related functions. Taken together, the successful candidate will have specialized experience and expertise in the cutting-edge field of metabolomics and will perform a complex set of functions to advance the research mission of the Georgetown University Medical Center. In order to attract and retain talented set of individuals for such a demanding position, we are requesting this position with a salary that is commensurate with the HR comp. review recommendations.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry/Mathematics/Biochemistry/Computational biology or related field; Masters or doctoral degree preferred.
  • Previous experience (1-5 years) of working in a core facility setting.
  • Expertise in laboratory techniques including but not limited to sample preparation, molecular and cellular biology techniques such as cell culture, western blots, ELISA, RTPCR, extracellular vesicle isolation
  • 1-2 years of experience in mass spectrometry operations, maintenance, sample preparation, data pre and post processing
  • 1-2 years of experience in data consolidation and reporting in a core facility setting


Preferred Qualifications
  • Quantitative and qualitative statistical analyses and tests.
  • Experience in post-processing analyses of mass spectrometry data.
  • Good communication skills. Strong verbal and written communications skills also required and ability to multi-task

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$44,022.00 - $73,406.80

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
