Job Description

This position supports the objectives of the Kearney International Center by managing the in-person, electronic, and telephone reception, providing general information and direction to clientele, while providing administrative support, office management, and operational support to the Director of the Kearney International Center and staff.

This position supports the University's retention and community relations objectives by providing services through telephone, email, and in-person interactions with current and prospective students, alumni, families, university personnel and external clientele in a welcoming and professional manner. This position supervises the front desk student workers and schedule, as well as the work permit process for international student employees working on-campus. This position must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident to verify international student status and update international student addresses in SEVIS.

Salary Range: $22.23 - $30.09

Minimum Qualifications

1. Knowledge of communications sufficient to:
  • Present clear and concise explanations of governing rules and regulations.
  • Explain the reasons for procedures, rules, laws, regulations, standards, and policies so others understand the information they are being given.
  • Write clearly and succinctly for a wide range of writing assignments including email correspondence, presentations, talking points, and memos


2. Knowledge of customer service practices and principles sufficient to:

Identify each customer's needs, meet quality standards for services, and

evaluate customer satisfaction Skill in customer services sufficient to:
  • Perform the duties described above with courtesy, respect, and interest in positive problem solving.
  • Effectively communicate and elicit information; interpret and explain program information with tact and diplomacy in difficult situations.

Ability to:
Use customer skills on the phone, in person and online to provide effective

general and specialist office support (this requires common courtesy, tact,

interest in positive problem solving, empathy, and the ability to organize

ideas logically):
  • Learn to use a multi-line telephone console.
  • Explain laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures to customers.
  • Manage customers' complaints tactfully and thoroughly


3. Knowledge of Office Management sufficient to:
  • Supervise and direct the work of student employees.
  • Manage competing priorities.


4. Knowledge of Technology sufficient to:
  • Use software applications to prepare, create, format, edit, print, save and/or attach a variety of documents, including emails, memos, reports, letters, presentations, spreadsheets, tables, charts, graphs, in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Prepare invoices, financial statements, and budget sheets.


5. Budget/Accounting skills sufficient to:
  • Monitor and balance multiple budgets, analyze various line items, ensure spending is within budget and grant guidelines, and effectively recommend fund transfers.


Preferred Qualification
  • Three (3) years' experience in administrative and/or instructional experience in higher education to include management and organizational skills.
  • Strong knowledge and skills in budget management.
  • Knowledge and ability to use computer applications required for communication, budget (Excel, Access, flowcharts, and bookkeeping), purchasing, student records system (such as ISRS and TerraDotta) and planning.
  • Previous knowledge of and experience with international education, such as study abroad, international students, or international partnerships.
  • Superb organizational and time management skills (delegation planning, event planning, etc.) with the ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Strong professional inter-cultural communication skills to successfully communicate with a culturally diverse clientele, including non-native English speakers and high level U.S. or foreign government or university officials.
  • Strong managerial and public relations skills.
  • Strong commitment to, involvement in, and/or experience with cultural diversity, internationalization, and affirmative action activities

Work safely at all times, which includes but is not limited to, participating and completing all required safety trainings, as well as performing all job tasks in accordance with Minnesota State University, Mankato policies and procedures utilizing appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment.
