The Manager of Graduate Advising in the CU Denver Business School plays a pivotal role in advancing and supporting student success across graduate programs. This full-time professional exempt position provides leadership and direct supervision to a team of Graduate Academic Advisors, ensuring high- quality advising services for students pursuing Master of Business Administration and Master of Science
degrees.
Grounded in a philosophy of student development, the manager collaborates with advisors to deliver advising in both individual and group settings that promotes academic progress, engagement, and retention. The role also works closely with the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs and Discipline Directors to guide curriculum development, implement program enhancements, and support a positive student experience.
Manager of Graduate Advising
What you will do:
Leadership:
- Supervise and lead team of graduate academic advisors; organize and lead weekly team meetings.
- Address escalated student concerns on behalf of the graduate advising department.
- Assess advising effectiveness through student feedback, metrics and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Prepare reports and presentations on graduate advising as needed.
- Responsible for the team's oversight in welcoming new graduate students, including the maintenance, revision, and distribution of welcome letters; assessing waivers; transfer credit requests, etc.
- Coordinate with the Enrollment Management team to ensure the graduate advising team assists with contacting admitted not enrolled students each term.
- Collaborate with Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs to oversee the Business School's graduate orientation held during the fall and spring semester; present advising info at these orientations as needed.
- Work with the Marketing team to ensure the website accurately reflects graduate programs and degree requirements.
- Serve on University and/or Business School Committees as requested or needed for the position.
- Participate in graduate student events taking place during the evenings and/or on weekends (i.e. Open Houses, Orientation, Networking events, Socials, Commencement, etc.).
- Responsible for updating the graduate advising shared drive and policy manual with new information as needed.
- With Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs and Discipline Directors, ensure degree plans are updated and maintained.
- Serve as department lead in working with the Business School course coordinator with editing of the catalog.
- Support Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs and Discipline Directors as needed in the development of other student pathways such as certificates and micro-credentials.
Academic Advising
- Serve as academic advisor for graduate students throughout their academic journey, including transfer evaluations, course selection and registration.
- Assist graduate Business students navigate University and School processes and procedures, including letters and petitions, schedule changes, academic probation, graduation and changes made by Program Directors.
- Develop advising resources and facilitate the dissemination of information for sessions and workshops for traditional, non-traditional, veteran and international graduate students.
- Provide Academic Advising services to new and current students through scheduled in-person, Zoom or phone appointments and/or email communications.
- Conduct individual and group advising sessions.
- Assist students in developing realistic academic plans by identifying the most effective and efficient path to program completion.
- Assist students in maintaining good academic standing, informing them of relevant policies, procedures and campus resources.
- Maintain appropriate documentation of all student contacts.
- Utilize technology extensively to support and implement the school's advising model including systems such as EAB/Navigate, CUSIS, and the degree audit system.
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources for assistance with disability resources & services, academic and personal issues and other university-related concerns.
Retention:
- Develop and implement various retention and outreach activities for the department.
- Monitor and track student retention and other success benchmarks as needed and assigned.
- Assist with events and other learning opportunities that support students in reaching their academic and career goals.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff in developing academic success and advising resources including, but not limited to, online and print resources that support retention efforts.
- Participate in retention activities both inside and outside of the school.
- Attend graduate student in-person or virtual events as needed to help with building community among enrolled graduate students.
Other General Graduate Student Services:
- Maintain positive and productive working relationships with all Program Administrators and faculty to ensure that students receive accurate and reliable information.
- Collaborate with Admissions and Enrollment Management team (recruiters) to share program and degree requirements.
- Serve as communication hub by drafting and sending email communications as it relates to course/program changes to current students.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business, public administration, education, communications, counseling, psychology, sociology, liberal arts, or other related fields.
- Three (3) years of higher education experience advising or counseling students.
- Competency with Microsoft Office programs.
Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)
- Master's degree in business, public administration, education, communications, counseling, psychology, sociology, liberal arts or other related fields.
- Five years of higher education experience in advising or counseling students.
- Experience with student information systems, such as Slate, SIS, EAB/Navigate etc. are a plus.
- Related professional experience as a manager or supervisor.
- Experience with Student Information Systems such as CU-SIS.

- Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in student advising and retention.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to present to large groups.
- Ability to work well with others and be team oriented.
- Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.

- Ability to lead, supervise and motivate a team of professional advisors.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to collaborate with faculty and other staff.
- High degree of reliability and flexibility.
Conditions of Employment
- This position follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences. Working from the office is encouraged when working on tasks that require a high degree of collaboration. Occasional work during the evening and/or weekends may be required.
Mental, Physical, and/or Environmental Requirements
- The ability to sit for extended periods, stand and walk occasionally, reach with hands and arms, use hands to manipulate a keyboard and mouse, and have good near vision for computer work; often requiring minimal lifting, but may involve bending or reaching to retrieve items from
shelves or drawers.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $72,497 - $80,128.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but
not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate
of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
