POSITION OVERVIEW
Under general direction, supports the Director of Advancement in planning and implementing donor and community engagement strategies for the District and Foundation. Leads donor stewardship, cultivation events, annual campaigns, communications, and Board engagement initiatives. Manages Advancement database integrity and reporting, supports grant and communications efforts, and serves as a key liaison to the Foundation Board and community partners to expand awareness and philanthropic support for College priorities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
An Assistant Director of Donor Relations and Community Engagement is distinguished from a Director of Advancement in that the incumbent provides operational leadership in donor relations, annual giving, cultivation events, Board engagement, and communications, while working under the general direction of the Director of Advancement, who has ultimate responsibility for strategic planning, budget, staffing, and overall Advancement leadership.

Essential Functions

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  • Assists in planning, organizing, directing, controlling, integrating, and evaluating the work of the Advancement Office; with assigned employees, develops, implements and monitors long-term plans, goals and objectives focused on achieving the District's mission and priorities; manages and directs the development, implementation and evaluation of plans, policies, systems and procedures for fundraising to achieve annual goals, objectives and work standards.
  • Assists and participates in the development of and monitors performance against the Advancement Office's annual budget; administers the department budgets, develops financial projections and statistical reports as required; approves purchase requests for supplies and equipment; ensures the department's cash handling and fiscal matters are handled in accordance with District policies and regulations as well as appropriate state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Develops and supports the planning and execution of fundraising and donor engagement initiatives to achieve annual Advancement goals, including individual giving operations, including donor research, prospect screening, portfolio management, and the development of major gift proposals and reports.
  • Develops and implements donor cultivation, acknowledgement, and stewardship strategies; ensures proper tracking of donor engagement in Advancement systems, including overseeing Advancement CRM/database management for accuracy, reporting, segmentation, and acknowledgement processes.
  • Assists in the development and management of government, foundation, and corporate giving, including identifying, researching, writing, and submitting letters of intent, full grant proposals, applications, and reports with required budgets and financial reports qualification.
  • Assists with the annual direct mail and online solicitations; works with support staff to ensure the production and fulfillment of appeals to encompass list segmentation, design, printing, mail production, and content uploads; engages and provides direction to staff and vendors including graphic designers, printers, mail house and webmaster, as necessary.
  • Serves as staff liaison to the Foundation Board, supporting recruitment, engagement, and fundraising participation, including representing Advancement Office at community meetings, donor events, and other external engagement activities.
  • Oversees the constituent relationship (CRM) database to ensure accuracy and integrity of data collection; supervises regular maintenance of prospect/donor records to ensure accurate information for contacts, biographies, meetings, gift entry and acknowledgements.
  • Coordinates fund development, marketing, and communications, including electronic and print communications, social media, networking, and event announcements; conducts surveys to measure and evaluate the impact and outcomes of fundraising and donor development efforts.
  • May perform full management and supervisory activities in the Advancement Department, subject to Director concurrence and in accordance with applicable policies, which includes selecting and training new employees; planning, assigning, scheduling, monitoring and evaluating completed work; approving overtime/compensatory time; preparing and signing employee performance evaluations; recommending salary/classifications; managing performance problems and taking appropriate disciplinary action; performing related management and supervisory activities including recognition of unit and individual performance.
  • Makes presentations to the Board of Trustees, Cabinet and other groups; represents the District and presents at community meetings and events and at local, regional, state and national conferences, meetings, workshops and training seminars.

OTHER DUTIES
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Works evenings and weekends as required for donor and community events.
  • Refers people to other offices, services, campus locations and resources as appropriate
  • May act in the absence of the Director.


Requirements & Desirables

REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree strongly preferred; and
  • At least three years of progressively responsible experience in advancement, fundraising, donor relations, or community engagement; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience; and
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of donor relations, stewardship, annual giving campaigns, and fundraising events.
  • CRM/database systems, donor prospecting tools, list segmentation, and acknowledgement processes.
  • Communications and public relations practices, including print and digital campaign tactics.
  • Fundraising and nonprofit compliance standards related to donor recognition, recordkeeping, and gift processing.
  • Community engagement and volunteer/Board development practices.
  • Safety policies and safe work practices applicable to the work being performed.
  • Board Policies, Administrative Procedures, Human Resources procedures and collective bargaining agreements.

  • Understand, interpret, explain and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures, laws, codes and ordinances.

  • Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive correspondence, records, reports, studies and other written materials.
  • Operate a computer and use standard business software.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:
  1. In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  2. Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
  3. California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  4. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. SALARY INFORMATION
FLSA Status: Exempt
Salary Grade: M43
Full Salary Range: $124,848 to $158,844 annually.
Starting Salary Range: $124,848 to $133,740 annually (Step 1 to Step 3). Background and experience will determine placement. Step 3 is the maximum entering step.

CLASSIFICATION CATEGORY
The Assistant Director of Donor Relations & Community Engagement is a classified administrative position, in compliance with all applicable sections of the California Education Code. Classified administrative employees are employed subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the individual's employment agreement with the District.

  • Medical Insurance: The District offers three plan options through each carrier; Kaiser and Blue Shield. Effective 10/01/2025, the District's contributions for medical insurance coverage are as follows:
    • Employee-only: $1,700/month
    • Employee plus one dependent: $2,400/month
    • Employee plus two or more dependents: $2,900/month
  • Dental Insurance: Delta Dental coverage for employee and dependents (premium paid by MCCD).
