OVERVIEW
Courses in Human Communication provide introductory-level study of the theories and skills of public speaking, argument and persuasion, and interpersonal and intercultural communications. Students have an opportunity to perform skills and to research and critically analyze messages in various contexts. The curriculum is designed for students interested in pursuing skills in marketing, public relations, communications, and to satisfy general education requirements.

College of Marin is looking for Full-time Faculty who:
  1. advocate for students and have a student-centered approach to education;

  4. have experience/commitment to educating basic skills, ESL, generation 1.5 students, underserved students, students with differing abilities, and veterans;

ONLINE INSTRUCTION
All faculty members must be available to provide instruction in the classroom (in person). Please note that the College does not offer online-only teaching assignments.

Essential Functions


  • Provide effective classroom and laboratory instruction using methods and materials appropriate to the subject matter;
  • Prepare and evaluate all class assignments and examinations;
  • Advise, assist and evaluate student performance and learning outcomes;
  • Participate in program activities including curriculum development, evaluation and decision-making, program planning, new teaching and learning methods, and resource development;
  • Contribute to development of program policies and procedures;
  • Participate in college professional or shared governance committees and in departmental activities such as maintaining course outlines, program review, student learning outcomes assessment, other curricular development, etc.;
  • Maintain and post office hours;
  • Maintain and submit accurate student records in a timely manner as required;
  • Maintain currency and knowledge in assigned area of responsibility;
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.


Requirements & Desirables

REQUIREMENTS
  1. A Master's degree in Speech, Speech Broadcasting, Telecommunications, Rhetoric, Communication, Communication Studies, Speech Communication, or Organizational Communication; OR
  2. A Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND a Master's in Drama/Theater Arts, Mass Communication, or English; OR
  3. The equivalent*; AND
  4. Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the campus community.

*If your educational degrees do not specifically match those listed above, you must request equivalency. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Desirable Attributes & Skills)
Beyond the Minimum Qualifications, the following teaching competencies are desirable:

  • Understanding equity as the recognition of historical and systemic disparities in opportunity, access, and outcomes and providing the resources necessary to address those disparities.
  • Ability to identify and implement equity-based, student-centered strategies to actively increase inclusion and racial equity in a community college setting.
  • Experience teaching communication courses, with a focus on rhetoric, debate and persuasion, and public speaking.
  • Expertise in the Communication discipline, with specialization in rhetoric and speech communication.
  • Competencies in and enthusiasm for curriculum and course development, teaching and learning theory, information literacy, and student learning outcomes assessment.
  • Familiarity with and openness to utilize multiple teaching modalities and approaches, including equity approaches, Universal Design for Learning, and online teaching and learning.
  • Enthusiasm for continual professional learning and the testing of innovative, multimedia teaching strategies to engage students and develop critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Knowledge, training and experience with online pedagogy and technology.
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for working in a collaborative environment, providing peer-to-peer mentoring and other forms of mentoring, and/or providing community service.
  • Ability to navigate legislative changes as impacts the Communication discipline and curriculum (ex. Common Course Numbering, CalGETC).
  • Commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the College of Marin.
  • Evidence of commitment to professional growth and service which may include, but is not limited to, membership professional organizations, presenting workshops, attending conferences or training, development of curriculum and instructional materials, membership in school/college committees or production of classroom-based research.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:
  1. In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  2. Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
  3. California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  4. Certificated candidates who have not previously been employed in an academic position in California will be required to provide a medical certificate from a licensed physician showing that the candidate is free from any communicable disease unfitting the candidate to instruct or associate with students. The medical exam shall have been conducted not more than six months before submission of the certificate and shall be at the expense of the candidate. (Ed. Code Section 87408.6)
  5. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.   6. Candidates applying for positions with the Marin Community College District may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under the California Education Code.

College of Marin has defined "Equity-Mindedness" as the perspective or mode of thinking exhibited by faculty and leaders who call attention to patterns of inequity in student outcomes. We believe that in order to eliminate racial equity gaps, it is critical for our faculty to be race-conscious and aware of the social and historical context of exclusionary practices in American education.

Please describe three ways you have, or would, increase equity and inclusion in the classroom and/or on campus contributing to the elimination of racial equity gaps.

If you hold additional degrees beyond the Bachelor's and Master's level, please attach a copy of your transcript conferring these degrees as well.   • If you satisfy the minimum educational requirement with a degree that was granted in the U.S., but your previous degree(s) was obtained from a foreign institution, you do not need to attach a Foreign Credential Evaluation (FCE) for your previous degree(s). You must, however, attach a copy of a (translated) transcript for the previous degree. For additional clarification of acceptable transcripts, please contact Human Resources.
  • If your degree that satisfies the minimum educational requirement was obtained from a foreign institution, you must submit an FCE for that degree and any other foreign degrees leading up to it.

SELECTION PROCESS

  • All application materials must be received by the Priority Screening Date to be considered during the initial screening. Applications received after the priority date may be considered thereafter at the discretion of the College until the position is filled.
  • The initial screening will begin after the priority date, and applicants will be notified of their status, either way, thereafter. Applicants selected for interview will be contacted separately to schedule an interview appointment with the screening committee.
  • Tentative Interview Timeline: First-level interviews are slated to be conducted mid-to-late January 2026 and will take place remotely, via Zoom. Final interviews are slated to be conducted mid-to-late February 2026 and will be held in person, on our Kentfield campus. Timeline is subject to change.
  • This position performs its duties on both the Kentfield and Indian Valley (Novato) campuses, so if not already residing within the Bay Area, the successful candidate must be willing to relocate. Regrettably, College of Marin is not able to offer reimbursement for travel or relocation at this time.


Supplemental & Salary Information

BARGAINING UNIT, TENURE & RETIREMENT PLAN

UPM - Full-time Faculty:
Employees in this position classification are represented by the United Professors of Marin (UPM/AFT 1610). Faculty members are required to comply fully with the United Professors of Marin Collective Bargaining Agreement, including payment of union dues, contributions to California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) and any other required contributions if applicable. General information regarding rights and responsibilities under the Agreement can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreements section located on the Human Resources website.

Tenure Eligibility for Probationary Contract Faculty:
Employees in this position classification are considered Probationary Contract Faculty. Faculty members must receive satisfactory performance evaluations for four (4) academic years to obtain tenure status as set forth by Education Code Section 87600 et seq. For the purposes of this provision, an academic year is July 1 through June 30. General information regarding rights and responsibilities under the Agreement can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreements section located on the Human Resources website.

SALARY INFORMATION
FLSA Status: Exempt

Please refer to the United Professors of Marin (UPM/AFT) salary schedule in the Classification & Compensation section of the Human Resources web site. Step 14 is the highest entering step for probationary contract faculty new to the District. Salary placement is non-negotiable and is dependent upon verified background and experience.

HEALTH, WELFARE and FRINGE BENEFITS
Marin Community College District (MCCD) offers a generous suite of health, welfare, and fringe benefits for benefit-eligible Full-time Faculty, including:
  • Medical Insurance: The District offers three plan options through each carrier; Kaiser and Blue Shield. Effective 10/01/2025, the District's contributions for medical insurance coverage are as follows:
  • The District contributes between $998.40 - $3,485.86 per month towards your Medical premium for eligible full-time faculty.
  • Dental Insurance: Delta Dental coverage for employee and dependents (premium paid by MCCD).
  • Vision Insurance: VSP coverage for employee and dependents (premium paid by MCCD).
  • Sick Leave: Accrues on an annual rate of 10 days per year; possible additional sick leave is accruable for work assigned during intersession.
  • Retirement Pension Plan (CalSTRS): MCCD contributes 19.10% of employee's creditable earnings to CalSTRS on a monthly basis. Mandatory employee contribution for 2025/2026 is 10.205% - 10.25%, depending on original date of membership and prior membership status. Note: Neither CalSTRS members nor MCCD contribute to Social Security for CalSTRS-covered service.
  • Voluntary Retirement Savings Plans: Additional tax-advantaged 403(b) or 457(b) retirement savings plans are also offered.
  • Basic Life & AD&D Insurance: $50,000 (premium paid by MCCD)
  • Voluntary Life Insurance: Coverage for employee, spouse and/or child(ren) (employee-paid)
  • Long-Term Disability: (premium paid by MCCD)
  • Short-Term Disability: (employee-paid)
  • Voluntary AD&D Insurance: Coverage for employee, spouse and/or child(ren) (employee-paid)
