Part-Time Peer Tutor, Upward Bound Program

Lynn Campus: 12 hours/week

Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 3:00pm-6:00pm and occasional Fridays, 3:00pm- 6:00pm

Employment Dates: ASAP - December 12, 2025 and January 20, 2026 - June 12, 2026

SALARY: $16.25/hr.; Non-benefited, grand funded position

About Upward Bound:

Since 1979, the North Shore Community College (NSCC) TRIO Upward Bound (UB) Program is a federally funded program for low-income, first-generation, and/or academically at-risk high school students. The primary mission is to increase the rate at which participants complete their secondary school education, and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education. The UB program provides academic, co- and extracurricular activities during the academic year and the summer, including instruction, tutoring, college tours, cultural events, health and fitness activities, educational workshops, and service activities.

ESSENTIAL FUCTIONS:
  • Provide and maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning and retaining material studied
  • Mentor students by participating and, occasionally, lead educational/cultural activities
  • Complete tutor orientation and training prior to starting work.
  • Tutor students individually and in small groups during after school hours.
  • Serve as a role model to high school students.
  • Maintain professional behavior with students.
  • Monitor student behavior and enforces program and college regulations.
  • Monitor students' academic progress and tutoring hours.
  • Prepare written summary reports on student progress every two weeks.
  • Circulates and monitor the tutoring rooms and actively addresses students who may need help.
  • Monitor the computer lab and program activities during tutoring hours as needed.
  • Help students clarify information, brainstorm, expand ideas, and think independently.
  • Help students understand mathematical and scientific formulas.
  • Schedule one-on-one tutoring sessions with students on academic probation.
  • Participate in meetings with Upward Bound full and part-time staff.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:
  • Tutoring experience, particularly with low income and/or minority youth preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively interact with students
  • Demonstrated sensitivity towards and passion and commitment to working with students and staff of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, different levels of academic preparation, or/and varying physical and learning abilities; prior experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to be punctual and dependable
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a team player;
  • Bilingual (Spanish, French, Khmer preferred)
  • Proficient with Google Suite and Zoom
  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.
