JOB SUMMARY
The Department of Child, Adolescent, & Family Studies at California State University, San Bernardino invites applications from a diverse group of qualified applicants for an Assistant Professor, tenure track position to begin August 2026.
The Department invites applications from teacher-scholars who will enrich our courses in statistics and research methodology; scholars whose work involves adolescent development and/or family studies are especially encouraged to apply. Qualified candidates are those that:
- Possess the necessary content expertise in statistics and research methodology,
- Specialize in studying the family and/or adolescent development
- Engage in scholarship and teaching supporting historically underrepresented groups, diversity, equity, and/or social justice.
The Department of Child, Adolescent, & Family Studies offers both theoretical and practical application courses, designed to help prepare graduates for direct service careers working with children of diverse backgrounds, to merge developmental knowledge with practical experience, and to prepare students for graduate training.
TYPICAL ACTIVITIES
The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in statistics and research methodology, and be able to teach courses in these areas, as well as in adolescent development and parenting-family relations, at both the undergraduate and master's levels (with class sizes ranging from 30 to 200 students). Demonstrated excellence in university teaching is essential. Additionally, the successful candidate must have an active and viable research program in which they can supervise, mentor, and involve undergraduate and graduate students. A record, or emerging record, of scholarly activities (e.g., peer-reviewed publications and/or conference presentations) is expected. The potential for securing external funding is also desirable.
Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A Ph.D. in child development, human development, developmental psychology, family studies, or a related field is required at the time of appointment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to the qualifications listed above, a research program with an applied focus and/or evidence of community-based professional activities is desired.
Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Child, Adolescent, & Family Studies at CSUSB houses two undergraduate concentrations (Early Childhood Development and Child and Adolescent Development) and one master's program. Established as a program in 1985, Child, Adolescent, & Family Studies began its inaugural year as an independent Department in 2021 and currently has over 600 declared majors and eight tenure-track faculty members.
The Department offers first-rate, state-of-the-art classroom instruction, as well as opportunities to apprentice with faculty mentors in a wide variety of research areas and community-based professional activities. Our faculty and students conduct research across the behavioral and educational sciences-from child development and learning to teaching practices, equity, innovation, and civic engagement. Our work connects schools, families, and communities and leverages diverse methods, technologies, and perspectives. The Department of Child, Adolescent, & Family Studies faculty are also involved in numerous campus and community initiatives housed under the Institute for Child Development and Family Relations including the Science of Parenting Project, Building Executive Functions for Academic Success Training, Quality Start San Bernardino, and the Infant-Toddler Lab School.
