Job Summary:
The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CU-SOM) has a full-time clinical faculty position available for an Advanced Practice Provider. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will be a clinical faculty member of the CU-SOM, entering at the level of Instructor. This position encompasses inpatient medical care services for patients suffering from a wide range of neurosurgical disorders (including spine, cranial, endovascular, vascular and stereotactical conditions). As a faculty member of the CU-SOM, opportunities for professional development may include precept of medical learners, education of nursing and medical staff, participation in quality and safety improvement projects, clinical research projects, and mentoring residents and junior Advanced Practice Providers.
Responsibilities of the APP position include management of inpatient neurosurgical patients with neurosurgical pathologies, perioperative management, and first assist in surgical cases, as appropriate. The APP will work closely with other members of the Neurosurgery service including APPs, surgical faculty, and residents. This service is heavily weighted towards inpatient responsibilities. The ideal candidate will have a high degree of organization, but an equally strong flexibility and skill in dealing with rapidly changing clinical situations and daily schedules. This position will work with all neurosurgical specialities to provide inpatient care for a variety of neurosurgical patients. This team functions as a single cohesive unit with one APP responsible for inpatient management and the others predominantly in outpatient roles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts comprehensive or episodic health history and physical assessment of patients with acute, chronic and/or potential Neurosurgical problems.
- In accordance with the Nurse Practitioner/PA -Physician written practice agreement, establishes medical diagnoses; orders and evaluates diagnostic studies; performs and monitors therapeutic procedures; assesses and/or manage follow-up plans. Provides age-specific care.
- Assesses psychosocial, cognitive, developmental and functional assets and plans care to incorporate these needs
- Prescribes medications and monitors patient response, adjusting as appropriate as an APP per written physician practice agreement or protocols.
- Records and documents health appraisal data necessary to maintain, coordinate and/or expedite required services.
- Analyzes clinic practice and identifies opportunities to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
- Meets regularly with appropriate physicians; works collaboratively to effect programmatic changes.
- First Assist on neurosurgical surgeries (as appropriate)
- Admitting patients to the hospital - either direct admit from an outside hospital or from the ED, performing history and physical exam, patient assessment, ordering appropriate labs, diagnostic studies, and radiology tests, and follow up and formulation of treatment plan of the ordered lab, studies, and tests
- Assisting with transfer orders, consultations, daily progress notes, discharge to outside facilities, and associated documentation
- Establishing and maintaining communication with other health care providers and departments to ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness and to promote consistency and continuity of care (e.g. handoffs, sign out and transfer summaries).
- Demonstrating responsibility and accountability for own professional practice, including seeing new clinic patients independently.
- Function as a clinical leader and educator in collaboration with physicians, nurses and others on the healthcare team
- Demonstrating knowledge of legal issues, including patient confidentiality and risk management, in all aspects of patient care and unit functioning
- Participating in research or care improvement activities as requested
- Demonstrating a service philosophy in all interactions with patients, families, and other members of the health care team
- Demonstrating proficiency in the use of computers and telecommunication modalities to document, track, and convey information
- Attending weekly specialty conferences as permissible with clinical schedule
- Attending conferences, board review courses, practical procedure boot camps and other professional development both in-state and out of state
- Participating in quality and safety improvement projects as requested

$107,890- $120,429
