Job Summary
The Division of Infectious Diseases within the University of Utah Department of Internal Medicine is looking to hire a researcher with scientific experience to serve as laboratory manager and help lead translational research exploring HIV persistence and senescence. This role entails partnering with a physician scientist faculty member at University of Utah, Dr. Adam Spivak, to support his ongoing, funded, bench-based HIV research and help to build a biorepository and clinical registry of older individuals living with HIV infection. Ideal candidate should be comfortable performing technical procedures in a research laboratory under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles, including maintenance of accurate and timely recording of observations, measurements and results. As laboratory manager, the candidate will be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanrooms and equipment, assisting with receipt and inspection of raw materials, and ordering and stocking of materials and equipment. Given the translational nature of this position, the ideal candidate will have proficiency and experience with development and maintenance of clinical registries and databases, including biostatistical analysis of complex datasets.

Responsibilities
1. Responsible for planning, organizing, directing daily laboratory functions with minimal supervision2. Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed3. Performs tests and procedures using laboratory equipment4. Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials5. Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research6. Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 4 - 6 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.
Master's degree in a related area may be preferred.

Preferences
Doctoral degree in virology, immunology, biology, biochemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalent (such as master's degree with subsequent relevant work experience) required. Knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. Ideal candidate will also have experience with large datasets.
