Position Announcement
This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by supporting individuals during some of their most challenging moments while contributing to a safe and caring campus environment. Under the general supervision of a Detective, the Victim Advocate serves as a trusted point of contact for those affected by crime, providing clear guidance through the investigative and judicial processes and connecting individuals with essential resources such as shelter, counseling, education, legal assistance, and financial aid. This role plays a vital part in ensuring individuals feel informed, supported, and respected throughout their experience.
As the primary Victim Advocate for Utah Valley University, this position works closely with Campus Public Safety and campus partners to promote well-being, safety, and access to resources across the university community. The role is well-suited for someone who values service, professionalism, and compassion, and who is motivated by work that directly supports student success and community care. In addition to core responsibilities, the position may assist with other departmental needs, offering variety and the opportunity to contribute broadly to UVU's mission.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Respond to hospitals, crime scenes, and other locations as requested by sworn Police Department personnel to assist primary and secondary victims with crisis needs and to provide emotional support. Assess victims' safety and other needs, inform them of available resources, and act as a liaison to obtain services.
- Track case information, document referrals and other actions, and write reports on case progress using victim services tracking systems and law enforcement databases; provide the current address and phone number of victims to the Office of the County Attorney. Assess and review violent crime reports, and ensure victims are contacted within established timeframes.
- Receive cases referred by police officers and serve as a liaison between the victim, the referring officer, and the attorney; educate each victim regarding the legal process and the rights afforded to them under the law.
- Assist victims in preparing and filing protective orders, stalking injunctions, and other legal Forms. Attend applicable court proceedings or ensure the attendance of a volunteer, testify as necessary, and coordinate the transportation of witnesses and/or victims and their families as needed.
- Coordinate with sworn personnel, dispatch, and investigative units using Spillman, UCJIS, and other public safety systems as required.
- Collect statistical information for the Office of Crime Victim Reparations and other required reporting entities. Maintain program data and reports in support of Campus Public Safety operations and compliance requirements.
- Coordinate with Juvenile Court, the Children's Justice Center, medical and mental health professionals, and other related persons or agencies regarding services provided to victims.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned in support of Campus Public Safety operations, which may include administrative, reporting, training support, or interdepartmental coordination tasks.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
Requires a Bachelor's degree in behavioral science, psychology, sociology, or another related field AND a minimum of two years of professional experience as a Victim Advocate, preferably in a law enforcement, university, or public safety setting; OR Any combination of education and experience totaling five years that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working within a police department and/or university setting.
- Experience using victim services tracking systems, Spillman, UCJIS, TAC, and dispatch-related systems and processes.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge of the criminal justice process and victims' rights.
- Knowledge of community resources available to victims for shelter, treatment, education, legal assistance, and financial aid.
- Knowledge of victim services tracking systems and law enforcement records management systems.
- Knowledge of campus-based public safety operations and coordination with police departments and/or universities.
- Skilled in reading, writing, and basic math.
- Skilled in word processing, spreadsheets, and basic computer applications.
- Skilled in using standard office equipment.
- Skilled in filing, record keeping, and record retrieval.
- Skilled in the use of law enforcement and public safety databases, including Spillman, UCJIS, and dispatch-related systems and processes.
- Ability to stay calm while working with people in crisis situations.
- Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with individuals representing a broad range of social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work activities.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive records and information.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision.
- Ability to balance victim advocacy responsibilities with additional departmental duties as assigned.
