Position Summary

The Risk Management Intern will support Santa Clara University's risk, insurance, and compliance operations. This role provides hands-on experience with institutional risk assessment, insurance and claims processes, and policy implementation. The internship offers direct exposure to internal university leaders as well as external professionals (insurance brokers, risk associations, peer institutions). Interns will gain both technical skills and professional experience through meaningful projects, mentorship, and active participation in the University's enterprise risk initiatives. In addition, the Risk Management Intern may serve as a lead student intern, supporting the onboarding, training, and day-to-day coordination of other student workers within the Risk Management Office.

Schedule: This position is scheduled for 30 hours per week for a maximum duration of 10 weeks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Risk Program Projects and Administration
  • Contribute to process and policy modernization efforts already underway, including but not limited to:
    • DMV Drivers Program
    • Youth Protection
    • Privacy Policy
    • Copyright Guidelines
  • Support the management of Certificates of Insurance (COIs), including receipt, review, and compliance tracking.
  • Help update and maintain Risk Management website content to ensure accuracy and accessibility.
  • Assist in the organization of insurance claims, incident reports, and compliance documentation.


Enterprise and Operational Risk Support
  • Assist with Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) initiatives, including data collection and preparation for committee meetings.
  • Collaborate with campus partners on safety, compliance, and risk training initiatives.
  • Support rollout of risk platform software by helping refine workflows and procedures.


Insurance and Claims Assistance
  • Support the exchange and review of insurance documentation for claims, and related contracts, programs, and events.
  • Assist with claims tracking and documentation.
  • Support the collection of data for insurance renewals and risk assessments.


Supervisory and Training Responsibilities (Student Workers)
  • Serve as a lead student intern supporting the supervision and coordination of Risk Management Office student workers.
  • Assist with onboarding and training student workers on Risk Management Office responsibilities, processes, and workflows, including documentation standards, compliance tracking, and use of office tools and systems.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, task coordination, and quality checks for assigned student work to ensure accuracy, consistency, and timely completion.
  • Support the development and maintenance of training materials, desk guides, and process documentation to promote continuity and knowledge transfer within the office.
  • Escalate issues, questions, or process gaps to professional staff as appropriate, and contribute suggestions for workflow and training improvements.


Administrative and General Support
  • Provide administrative support for risk-related events, meetings, and workshops.
  • Conduct research on best practices and peer benchmarking in higher education risk management.
  • Maintain databases and records for reporting and compliance purposes.
  • Assist with assigning and coordinating routine administrative tasks among student workers as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Professional Exposure & Development

This internship is designed as a high-impact professional experience:
  • Internal exposure: interns will participate in meetings with university leaders, administrators, and cross-departmental stakeholders, gaining insight into institutional decision-making and governance.
  • External exposure: interns will join broker strategy meetings, risk management association events (JWIG Consortium member meetings, California networking meetings including URMIA, Santa Clara and Golden Gate RIMS chapters), and other professional networking opportunities.
  • Mentorship model: the internship combines independent, hands-on assignments with active mentorship. Interns are given meaningful projects with room to learn and problem-solve, while receiving clear guidance, context, and feedback to ensure growth.


Qualifications:
  • Current student in good standing, preferably pursuing a degree in business, finance, law, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience (e.g., prior student employment, team lead roles, mentoring, or training responsibilities) preferred.
  • Interest in risk management, compliance, insurance, or university operations preferred.
