Managing Director

About the Opportunity

The Center for Law in the Public Interest ("CPIAC") at Northeastern University School of Law ("NUSL") is the hub of outstanding public interest activities that reflect the NUSL ethos that legal work is most commendable and redemptive when serving social justice. Already NUSL has myriad clinics, institutes and special programs that bring a public interest focus to their mission and work; and a broad ranging curriculum exploring legal areas that disproportionately affect the underrepresented and marginalized in our society, including the unique, client-centered, first-year course Legal Skills in Social Context. The law school annually hosts world-class, public interest attorneys to share experiences with our students, including the Daynard Distinguished Visiting Fellows, the Givelber Distinguished Public Interest Lecturers, and the Valerie Gordon Human Rights Lecturer, sponsored by the Program on Human Rights in the Global Economy. Our students aspire to public interest careers at a rate exceeding those of nearly every law school in the country. Relative to graduating-class size, NUSL ranks fifth in the country, according to one recent study, in receiving the prestigious Skadden Fellowships and Equal Justice Awards. CPIAC plays a critical role in maintaining NUSL's position as the leading public interest law school in the 21st century.

The CPIAC Managing Director works with CPIAC's Faculty Director to implement CPIAC's strategic plan for bringing NUSL's public interest focus to the next level and, with direction from the Faculty Director, provides long-term and day-to-day leadership and management of the Center. The Director also works closely with the Assistant Director for Public Interest in the Center for Career Development and Cooperative Learning to increase access to public interest co-ops for NUSL students and identify public interest job opportunities for NUSL graduates. The Director has responsibility for organizing the Center's lectures, symposia, coffee hours, conferences, programming with visiting fellows, and other events; spearheads CPIAC's existing research projects and develops and proposes new research initiatives, in particular, interdisciplinary research with other Northeastern colleges; outreaches to organizations in public interest fields to engage them in the work of CPIAC and other collaborative opportunities with the law school; works with faculty to support curriculum development aimed at building a specialized legal pedagogy for social justice lawyering in a changing world; expands student pro bono opportunities; works with the Faculty Director and the Office of Advancement to identify prospects for foundation and corporate support and other potential financial resources for CPIAC's work; drafts and submits grant proposals and grant reports and coordinates production of grant deliverables; works with the Director of Communications on the marketing of NUSL as a public interest law school and to publicize CPIAC events; produces CPIAC's e-newsletters and manages CPIAC's social media; collaborates with student organizations to support student-driven events and opportunities; manages the Center's budgets; and in coordination with the Faculty Director, the Dean and the Associate Deans, hires and supervises staff as needed.
