Position description
The Education Department invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position in multilingual learning, English Language Development (ELD), and Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) within multilingual educational contexts. The ideal applicant will be well-versed in methods that support the full linguistic repertoire of learners and demonstrate a strong understanding of the historical and theoretical foundations of language learning in California.
UCSB's Department of Education / Teacher Education Program seeks a faculty member who can instruct and supervise preservice teachers in the Bilingual Authorization in Spanish Program. The responsibilities include teaching courses in multilingual education and multilingual teaching methods, working with partners in local school districts to find bilingual Spanish-English placements for preservice teachers, and supervising multilingual preservice teachers in their fieldwork. In addition, this faculty member will support the growth of the program, including meeting accreditation requirements, supporting student and staffing needs, fostering the expansion of program partnerships, and ensuring that the course offerings meet the Teaching Performance Expectations (TPE's) as outlined by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The faculty member will also instruct other courses related to multilingual education in the Teacher Education Program and the Department of Education's graduate and undergraduate programs as needed. Collaboration with colleagues across the Department of Education and Gevirtz School of Education is encouraged and supported.
Strong applicants bring a demonstrated commitment to advancing multilingual education and preparing TK-12 teachers for Spanish-English bilingual instruction. We especially value applicants who have experience preparing pre-service or in-service teachers for teaching in a multilingual society. Applicants also demonstrate broad theoretical knowledge of the development of multilingualism and culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies, and bring experience in TK-12 educational settings.
The Teacher Education Program (TEP) at UCSB prepares approximately 90 preservice teachers per year to earn a teaching credential in one of the following areas: multiple subjects teaching (MST), education specialist in extensive support needs (ESN), education specialist in mild to moderate support needs (MMSN), single subject teaching (SST) in English language arts, history social science, math, science, or Spanish. Preservice teachers from each of these programs who are bilingual in Spanish can pursue a bilingual authorization through participation in the Bilingual Authorization in Spanish Program (BASP), which involves coursework and fieldwork in bilingual classrooms. Each year, approximately one-fourth of all students in the program pursue this bilingual authorization. We anticipate increasing demand for the authorization and look forward to further developing the program to meet the growing need for bilingual educators in California.
