Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $132,600 to $196,200/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $132,600 to $259,800/yr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties: Under the general direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor of Budget and Planning, the Director of Institutional Research, Planning and Assessment (IRPA) is responsible for managing a comprehensive program of institutional research and assessment, reporting, and analysis that supports campus academic planning, enrollment planning, program assessment, and strategic decision-making. The Director of IRPA provides financial, faculty, student, staff, and other important data and analytical studies used by departments, schools, and programs in order to enhance decision-making processes, problem solving, strategic planning, policy review, student success, and determining institutional priorities and goals. The Director of IRPA engages in complex data compilation, statistical analyses, report development, and maintains overall responsibility for a comprehensive survey research program capable of surveying students, faculty and staff on matters of importance for institutional assessment, academic planning or resource planning as requested by UCSB senior officers and administrative offices. Surveys include the UC Undergraduate Experiences Survey (UCUES), Senior Exit Survey, Undergraduate Alumni Survey, the International Student Survey, the UCSB Transportation Survey, and other surveys as requested. The Director of IRPA provides undergraduate admission yield modeling and other statistical support to the Office of Admissions to ensure that the University meets its enrollment goals. Provides analytical and statistical support to the Academic Program Review process.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 10+ years of experience in the field of institutional research or some other similar decision support profession is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in an Advanced degree in any field, with preference for academic work that includes advanced statistical research methods and quantitative data analysis.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
- 15% Leadership & Management - Manages and leads a team of six senior professional staff that provides timely, comprehensive, and relevant information, complex data compilation, statistical analyses, report development and decision support for UCSB senior leaders and other policy makers, the campus community, and the University of California, Office of the President. Ensures that staff receive appropriate and continuous professional development and training with current and relevant data analysis and survey systems enabling staff to provide robust analysis and increase analytical independence to further promote the effectiveness of the Institutional Research function.
- 85% Research, Planning & Assessment - Lead and manage a comprehensive institutional research program that supports the University's mission and strategic goals. Develop and implement a clear vision for the function that is responsive to the broad institutional need for information and useful to a wide range of internal and external customers.
Engage with UCSB leaders to determine their data, reporting, and analysis needs. Ensure that the office is delivering the kind of data and analysis required by all constituencies. Prepare, publish, and present reports to campus management in support of institutional planning, campus policy-making, strategic decision-making and student success. Foster a proactive culture within the office that takes initiative and creativity in developing novel studies and reports that support decision making.
Produce analytical and statistical studies with real institutional impact. Oversee the creation of yearly standard institutional research reports and Tableau dashboards, such as the Campus Profile, Common Data Set, Campus Portrait and other student profiles as well as ad hoc reports, as requested. Oversee and develop relevant and impactful planning and analysis content for the campus Tableau Server.
Oversee responses on behalf of the campus to local, state, and national statistical surveys (e.g., U.S. News & World Report, Times Higher Education), institutional questionnaires, and non-routine requests for data and information.
Ensure the delivery of the quantitative and qualitative research and analysis of data relevant to institutional policy and programmatic and planning needs, both in the long-term and short-term. Based on historical enrollment data and on current admissions cycle data, and with knowledge of the campus's strategic goals, hold principal responsibility for managing the campus's short- and long-term enrollment planning and reporting. Present and explain the enrollment projections to various campus, community and system-wide audiences including Long-Range Development Plan (LRDP) enrollment reporting.
Monitors undergraduate admissions yields and notifies campus leadership if it appears that the campus may be under- or over-enrolled for a particular term. Advise senior leaders with regard to corrective plans and potential budgetary consequences.
Monitor the external environment in which the campus operates and evaluate how changes in that environment may affect achievement of campus goals.
Serve on campus-wide planning and administrative committees, the Enrollment Management Committee, the EVC's Academic Planning Group, the EVC's Faculty Salary Equity Study Committee, the Regent Scholarship Committee and as a consultant to academic senate committees as appropriate and needed.
Represent UCSB in a variety of inter-institutional data exchange consortia (e.g., AAU Data Exchange) and serve as the official campus contact with external organizations and state and federal agencies for information reporting. Maintain affiliations with professional institutional research organizations (e.g., Association of Institutional Research [AIR] and California Association of Institutional Research.
