Job Summary

The Kitchen Lead will be the acting kitchen manager and cook for breakfast and lunch meals typically serving 20-50 people but occasionally up to 100 people. Who We Are

Located at 9500 feet in the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies in Nederland, the Mountain Research Station is an interdisciplinary facility of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (University of Colorado) providing research and educational opportunities for scientists, students, and the general public. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Lead kitchen manager and cook for breakfast and lunch meals. Typically serving groups of 20-50 people and occasionally up to 100 people.
  • Responsible for leading support kitchen staff, typically one additional person.
  • Timely preparation, cooking, serving, and clean-up of scheduled daily meals.
  • Set menu and order food within constraints of a budget to meet demand of planned weekly customers.
  • Follow all applicable food safety rules and regulations.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for customers.


What You Should Know

  • This temporary position will last May-Sept 2026, with approximately 30-40hrs from June 2-Aug 20. Before June 2 and after Aug 20, only occasional weekends will be required.
  • Core hours are Monday-Friday 5:30 am-11:00 am, and Sat 6:30 am-12:00 pm (noon). This position requires the flexibility to work some weekends, as well as flexibility with hours and days worked. Actual hours will depend on guest numbers and dates and will vary throughout the summer.


What We Can Offer

The pay rate for this position is $28.00/hour.

Temporary positions at the University of Colorado are not benefits-eligible, however, all positions are eligible for paid sick leave.

What We Require

  • 3+ years of experience in a kitchen leadership position.
  • Certification or ability to complete certification for Colorado Food Protection Manager. Course can be completed upon hire at employer expense.
  • Ability to accommodate food allergies and preferences including vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, etc.


What You Will Need

  • Independent worker with the ability to manage time and cook for groups of 20-50 without supervision with a small support team.
  • Experience and willingness to work with Station Manager to develop menu that meets dietary needs and also considers and fits within operating budget.
