Salary Range:

Salary will be between $67,547 and $ 83,636 based on the number of courses taught and years of teaching experience; benefits eligible.

Purpose:

The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a Lecturer (non-tenure track) position in Spanish Studies beginning September 2026. Courses may include lower-division language and culture courses, upper-division language, literature & culture courses, and Core courses in English.

Specific assignments will be made according to the academic qualifications of the individual and programmatic need. The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of 6 to 7 courses over the year, with at least one course in each quarter, fall, winter and spring. Each quarter is 10 weeks long, with an 11th week set for final examinations. This position starts September 1, 2026. This position is for in-person instruction.

Basic Qualifications

o Ph.D. in Spanish and Comparative Literature or related fields; multiple genres and periods.

o Native- or near-native level fluency in Spanish and English.

o Demonstrated excellence in teaching Spanish at least two or more years at the college/university level.

o Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

o Experience and expertise with communicatively-oriented, proficiency-based language instruction, ACTFL WorldReadiness Standards, and instructional technologies (specifically, AI).

o A strong interdisciplinary background and ability to teach courses that promote critical cultural awareness and connect with other disciplines (Business, Communications, Public Health, History, Art and Art History, Film Studies) and SCU Centers of Distinction (Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education, Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, Markkula Center for Applied Ethics) are highly desirable.

o Ability and experience teaching Spanish for the Professions (professional applications) and creative writing is also highly desirable.

o Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that promote access and academic success for all students.

o Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.

Responsibilities - Teaching (95%) & Service (5%)

Teaching (95%) - Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including:

o Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.

o Assigning and evaluating assignments that align with the course description and course learning outcomes, and providing timely feedback to students; measuring student learning outcomes within the context of departmental and Core objectives and the ACTFL World Readiness Standards.

o Holding regular weekly office hours on campus.

o Submitting student grades that are an appropriate, accurate and fair measure of student performance to the Office of the Registrar (or to the lecture instructor, if applicable) by the designated deadline.

o Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses.

o Conducting pre-requisite checks for all registered students in assigned courses.

o Teaching from an approved syllabus for courses assigned or working with the Chair and Spanish Faculty to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Committee.

o Serve as an advisor to assigned students providing informed advice;

o Work in conjunction with language coordinator and senior colleagues in Spanish on course development, pedagogy and assessment.

Service (5%)
Faculty Handbook section 3.6.3.3 "Specific Functions Related to Service" defines service as "fostering and advancing the mission and goals of the department, the University, or the profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship or creative work such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, and community service performed in virtue of their professional expertise or association with the University."

Effective service tasks relevant to the Spanish Studies program include: attending department meetings, helping to market the program and recruit students, supporting outreach initiatives, event programming, and other service-related tasks as needed within the program.

Other minimal instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department.
