The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Medicine.

Founded by John Morgan in 1765, Penn's Department of Medicine is the nation's first department of medicine and has a rich history, with a long tradition of excellence in patient care, research and education. Since its founding, the Department has shaped the field by pioneering foundational research, clinical care and cutting-edge educational paradigms. The Department has systematically built programs that have become deeply integrated into the fabric of Penn Medicine, the University, and the medical community.

In addition to excellence in its tripartite mission, the Department of Medicine has substantive ties to multiple centers, institutes, departments and other schools on campus. The Chair of the Department directs 13 divisions representing the full breadth of internal medicine and its subspecialties, with more than 700 full-time and over 450 associated faculty and Penn Medicine Clinicians, in addition to over 2,100 professional and support staff. The Department performs 880,000 procedures and treats 380,00 inpatients annually at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC), Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH), the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (CVAMC), with four additional hospitals across the region. It provides outpatient services for nearly 780,000 delivered across 73 outpatient practices. The Department is a member of the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP) and the Chair serves as a member of the Board of Directors of CPUP whose primary role is to coordinate the tripartite mission of Penn Medicine's 18 clinical departments.

Qualified candidates hold a MD degree with active board certification in internal medicine or a relevant subspecialty and licensed or eligible for medical licensure in Pennsylvania. Dual degrees are welcome. Candidates' academic achievement must support appointment at the Professor level in the Standing Faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, candidates must possess strong leadership skills suited to a matrixed environment; the ability to develop and execute innovative strategies; demonstrated experience leading effective clinical operations; a highly respected academic record; a commitment to faculty development, retention, and recruitment; and experience in development and donor relations.
