The Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of the Arts at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor of Technical Direction with appointment to begin Fall 2020.

CSUF faculty are committed teachers and scholars who bring research and creative discovery to students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university committees. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include teaching a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses in Stagecraft, Scenery Automation and Rigging, Advanced Technical Production, and Vectorworks/CAD. This person will also be responsible for producing creative/scholarly work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in their discipline and larger university communities.

The Department
The Department of Theatre & Dance serves approximately 550 Majors, with 23 Full-time and 28 Part-time Faculty and 14 Full-time Professional Staff, and offers BFA Degrees in Acting and Musical Theatre; BA Degrees in Theatre, Design & Production, and Dance; and MFA Degrees in Directing and Design & Production. The yearly season consists of up to 10 main stage and 8 studio series productions (performed, designed, and staffed by students) including plays, musicals, dance, and opera, produced in 5 spaces, utilizing a variety of faculty directors, graduate student directors, and guest directors. The Department of Theatre and Dance at California State University, Fullerton, is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre and the National Association of Schools of Dance, and is a member of University Resident Theatre Association and United States Institute for Theatre Technology. Position
The primary professional responsibilities of this instructional faculty member are teaching a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses in in Stagecraft, Scenery Automation and Rigging, Advanced Technical Production, and Vectorworks/CAD along with other courses in the major, as needed. Duties include technical direction or mentoring of technical direction students for mainstage, studio series, showcases, and workshop productions as part of the regular assignment. In addition this position will be expected to participate in advising students; engaging in active peer-reviewed creative/scholarly activities; participation in department, college, university, and system-wide service including participating with recruitment; maintaining office hours; and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues. Positive tenure and promotion decisions require excellent teaching; a record of peer-reviewed creative/scholarly activity in the discipline; strong leadership contributions to school, college and university committees and to external professional organizations that serve the broader discipline's communities.

Qualifications

  • MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in Design & Technical Direction
  • Evidence of professional experience serving as a Technical Direction
  • Evidence of experience in scenery automation using Creative Connor's control systems, arena rigging, and counterweight rigging systems
  • Evidence of successful university teaching experience in Technical Production
  • Evidence of current expertise in pedagogical trends in the fields of Technical Production
  • Evidence of the ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarship, and service
  • Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues and communities
  • Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in teaching diverse student populations, including firstgeneration college students

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, and is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases.
