Job Summary

The Business Development Manager will play a critical role in driving growth for the Utah DCC. This individual will be responsible for identifying and developing new business opportunities, representing the organization externally, and managing inbound and outreach activities in collaboration with internal stakeholders.

This is a highly visible, hands-on role for a self-directed professional who is comfortable both operating independently and liaising with external audiences while navigating a matrixed organizational structure. Initially serving as the sole business development professional, the position will help establish foundational BD processes, with the opportunity to build and manage a team as the organization grows.

Essential Functions:
  • Identify, qualify, and pursue new business opportunities within the biotech, pharma, and medical device industries. Assist with identification of new business opportunities that may be government or philanthropic partner funded.
  • Develop and manage a pipeline of prospective clients through outbound outreach, inbound leads, and networking.
  • Conduct introductory and follow-up meetings with potential customers.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations, capability overviews, and responses to client inquiries, in coordination with internal teams.
  • Support proposal development, including coordination with scientific, operational, and financial stakeholders.
  • Track and report on business development activities and metrics.
  • Represent the Utah DCC at conferences, trade shows, and networking events.
  • Serve as a key external ambassador for the Utah DCC's mission, vision, values, and capabilities.
  • Provide environmental scanning and stakeholder feedback to inform program messaging and communications.
  • Support digital communications initiatives, including email outreach and coordination of institutional social media channels.
  • Liaise with marketing and communications professionals throughout the University.

Business Development Specialists
Pursue, cultivate, and expand opportunities that deliver long-term value and fuel the DCC's growth. Create strategic opportunities to grow customers, markets, and relationships. Stay knowledgeable about the current market and effectively target opportunities for growth. Define target audiences to understand which solutions/features interest them. Brainstorm new ideas, initiatives, and activities to increase profitability and create value for the organization and customers. Identify and develop strategic alliances and partnerships, working to execute new markets, new distribution channels, and new products. Conduct competitive analysis, track industry trends, and identify new markets.

Business Development Specialist, IIRequires moderate skill set and proficiency in discipline. Conducts work assignments of increasing complexity, under moderate supervision with some latitude for independent judgment.

Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

This is a Developing-Level position in the General Professional track.Job Code: P22392Grade: P16Expected Pay Range: $50,909 to $69,585
Business Development Specialist, IIIConsidered highly skilled and proficient in discipline. Conducts complex, important work under minimal supervision and with wide latitude for independent judgment.

Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.

This is a Career-Level position in the General Professional track.Job Code: P22393Grade: P18Expected Pay Range: $61,599 to $84,197
Business Development Specialist, IVRecognized as subject matter expert and advanced individual contributor professional. Requires specialized skill set. Conducts highly complex work, unsupervised and with extensive latitude for independent judgment.

Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 8 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 6 years of directly related work experience.

This is an Advanced-Level position in the General Professional track.Job Code: P22394Grade: P21Expected Pay Range: $81,983 to $112,068

Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:
Business Development Specialist, II: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.
Business Development Specialist, III: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.
Business Development Specialist, IV: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 8 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 6 years of directly related work experience.



Preferences
  • Ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships current and prospective clients.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to function effectively in a matrixed environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and proactively with multiple stakeholders.
  • MBA.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, life sciences, healthcare, marketing, or a related field.
  • 5-7 years of experience in business development, sales, or partnerships within a CRO, biotech, pharmaceutical, or clinical research environment
  • Familiarity with clinical trial services, regulated environments, and life-sciences commercialization.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate leads, build pipelines, and engage prospective clients independently.
  • Experience collaborating with marketing teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to conferences and meetings.

Work Schedule Summary: Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. May require working outside of regular scheduled hours, including weekends. Opportunities for a hybrid telework schedule are available.This position offers a flexible, mostly remote work schedule for candidates who reside in the state of Utah. While most duties can be performed remotely, the employee must be available to attend essential meetings and events on campus as needed. A hybrid telework schedule is available for this position, dependent on operational needs and management approval. The arrangement will be established in partnership with the manager and is subject to ongoing center needs. This position will require occasional travel.
